Muftak drinking at Chalmun's Cantina

A male Talz from Orto Plutonia, Muftak was abandoned in Mos Eisley, a spaceport located on the planet Tatooine, as a newborn. He grew up knowing he was different from other species, but had no knowledge of the Talz or his homeworld. Muftak became a pickpocket and took up residence in abandoned tunnels[1] beneath Docking Bay 83.[3] To avoid overheating,[4] he frequented Chalmun's Cantina,[1] where he could also pick a pocket or two.[4] He was friends with various other regulars, and, when not drinking, he planned robberies with a Chadra-Fan named Kabe.[1]

In the year 0 BBY,[5] Muftak was drinking[1] at Chalmun's when Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and a local farmboy named Luke Skywalker arrived in search of a pilot to take them to the planet Alderaan. He witnessed the pair get into an altercation with[2] Dr. Cornelius Evazan and his companion, Ponda Baba,[1] that ended with Kenobi dismembering Baba and wounding Evazan with his lightsaber.[2]

Personality and traitsEdit

Muftak took it upon himself to use his great strength to keep Kabe, who, while street-smart, was also young and impetuous, out of too much trouble.[1]

A giant Talz,[3] Muftak was 2.1 meters in height,[1] with four black eyes and gray skin covered in thick, white fur.[2]

Behind the scenesEdit

Nicknamed "Four Eyes"[6] and "Spider-Man"[7] during production[6] due to his many eyes and furry face, Muftak was built for the booth inserts shot well after the main stage photography for the cantina sequences of the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope,[7] where he was portrayed by mold maker Laine Liska.[6]

According to a 1978 memo, he was originally going to be named "Cullatran," but more than a decade later, the name "Muftak" was used by writers[8] Michael Stern and Grant S. Boucher in their 1989 Star Wars Legends supplement for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, Galaxy Guide 1: A New Hope.[9] This name became canon when it was used in Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know, a reference book written by Adam Bray, Kerrie Dougherty, Cole Horton, and Michael Kogge[4] that was released on September 4, 2015.[10]
