Nanta was an Ewok in the Bright Tree tribe of the moon Endor. In 4 ABY, Nanta was part of a scouting party that discovered a group of rebel offworlders caught in one of their net traps. Surrounding the offworlders, the Ewoks disarmed them, with Nanta taking the Wookiee Chewbacca's bowcaster. Nanta and the other Ewoks then fell to their knees and prayed to the protocol droid C-3PO, mistaking him for the deity known as the Golden One.

In his childhood, Nanta failed at most of Ewok activities: making spears and knowing the berries and plants of Endor. However his mind wondered about things in the stars. During a confrontation with Logray in a class to identify plants, Logray identifies how Nanta would be a great story-keeper. Nanta chooses then to start writing stories on a puny tree near the village.

The scouting party brought the offworlders back to Bright Tree Village, where they were eventually accepted as members of the tribe. The Ewoks then agreed to help them fight the Galactic Empire on Endor. The next day, the Ewoks led the rebels to a Imperial shield bunker which the offworlders infiltrated; however, after the rebels were captured in an Imperial trap, the Ewoks attacked the Imperial forces at the bunker. In the ensuing battle, Nanta was fatally wounded by a shot from an All Terrain Scout Transport. The Ewok's friend Romba knelt beside his fallen comrade and hugged the dying Nanta.

Biography[]

Finding a god[]

"Chewie, give them your crossbow."
―Luke Skywalker tells Chewbacca to surrender his weapon to Nanta[2]

Nanta[3] was an Ewok member[2] of the Bright Tree tribe[5] that lived in[2] Bright Tree Village[6] on the forest moon of Endor. In 4 ABY,[1] He[3] was part of[2] a scouting party that the warrior Teebo[6] led out from the village into the forest. The party came upon a group of offworlders who had been caught in one of the Ewoks' net traps, hiding in the undergrowth around the trap as the captives freed themselves from the dangling net and fell to the forest floor. Nanta and the other Ewoks then emerged from the foliage, surrounding the offworlders. The Ewoks then disarmed them at spearpoint, with Nanta trying to take the Wookiee Chewbacca's bowcaster. The pair intiailly wrestled over the weapon until the Jedi Luke Skywalker told Chewbacca to hand the bowcaster over, at which point the Wookiee let Nanta take it.[2]

The offworlders' protocol droid, C-3PO, then sat up for the first time in front of the Ewoks, who mistook the droid for the deity known as the Golden One. Falling to their knees, Nanta and the other Ewoks bowed repeatedly before C-3PO while chanting. They reared up, weapons ready again, when the droid's companion Han Solo made to lunge at him, after which the scouting party brought the offworlders back to Bright Tree Village. C-3PO was borne aloft on a wooden throne while the others were bound to wooden frames and carried. At the village, the offworlders were eventually freed and then made members of the tribe after C-3PO told stories of their fight against the Galactic Empire.[2]

One of the fallen[]

Chief Chirpa declared that the Bright Tree tribe would aid the offworlders, who were members of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, in fighting the Empire and the following day, the Ewoks showed the rebels the location of a back entrance into an Imperial shield bunker that they were searching for on the moon. The rebels then infiltrated the bunker, but fell into a trap and were escorted back outside into a large gathering of Imperial forces. An army of Ewoks then attacked the Imperials from the surrounding bushes, allowing the rebels to fight alongside them as a battle broke out.[2]

During the fighting, Nanta and[2] Romba, a warrior and friend of Nanta,[7] rushed together through the undergrowth as an[2] All Terrain Armored Transport fired upon them.[3] One of the shots impacted next to the pair, knocking both to the ground.[2] Nanta was fatally wounded by the shot,[7] and rocked back on forth briefly on the ground before falling still.[2] Romba then rolled over and stood, trying to pull Nanta with[2] him,[7] but the other Ewok did not stir. Speaking to Nanta in Ewokese, Romba shook the fallen Ewok, but when he still did not respond, the warrior fell to his knees[2] and began to mourn,[3] hugging his dying friend.[7] The Ewoks and rebels would go on to defeat the Empire on Endor, destroying the bunker and then destroying the Death Star II superweapon it had been protecting in orbit above.[2] In the end, his story would be transformed into a ballad by Romba, "The Ballad of Nanta".

Personality and traits[]

Nanta had striped gray and black fur and brown eyes.[2]

Equipment[]

Nanta wore a brown hood and carried a spear while in the scouting party.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

"For years, the Ewok slain by AT-AT blaster fire on the forest moon of Endor was referred to simply by the Tales from the Crypt-esque name "Corpsey," primarily because… well, what else are you going to call a dead Ewok?"
―Joe Schreiber[3]

Nanta first appeared in the 1983 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.[2] In the current Star Wars canon, the character was identified in an interview with author Joe Schreiber in the "Red Five" department of Star Wars Insider 150,[3] which released on June 10, 2014.[8] The name originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first used for a 2012 Hasbro Inc. figure of the Ewok.[9] Prior to this, the fallen Ewok was nicknamed "Corpsey" by fans.[3] Author Benjamin Harper regretted not establishing whether the Ewok was called "Lana" or not in the 2008 book Obsessed With Star Wars, as Harper believed that this was what[10] Romba says as the other Ewok tries to pull Nanta from the ground.[2]
