Nelvaanians were a sentient species native to the frozen[1] Outer Rim[2] world of Nelvaan. They practiced a perilous initiation ritual in which young males had to obtain a scale from the tail of a horax, giant blue-skinned reptiles with saber-sharp fangs and enormous horns, in order to join the ranks of their tribes' greatest warriors. The scales would then be used to make an elixir capable of repelling horaxes for up to a year with its smell.[1]

The Nelvaanians were a peaceful, low-tech race; however, during the Clone Wars, the Confederacy of Independent Systems-aligned Techno Union experimented on members of the species, turning them into cyborg monstrosities.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Nelvaanians were first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in the reference book Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know,[1] written by Adam Bray, Kerrie Dougherty, Cole Horton, and Michael Kogge and released on September 4, 2015.[4] The species made its debut in the Star Wars Legends continuity in Chapter 22 of the television series Star Wars: Clone Wars,[5] which aired on March 22, 2005 on Cartoon Network.[6]
