"Rebels on Hoth? All I have is your word for it? What could they be doing on such a worthless planet? I'm deleting your reports."
―General Nevar[src]

Nevar was an incompetent Human male brigadier general whose career in the Imperial Army during the Galactic Civil War was defined by nepotism and sycophancy. Circa early 2 ABY, Nevar supervised a failed Imperial expedition to capture and conscript the Force-sensitive Dathomiri Nightsister Kyrisa, who had taken refuge on the remote ice planet Hoth. During the unsuccessful operation, the Imperial expedition encountered a Rebel Alliance group setting up an outpost on Hoth, although when word of the Rebel presence reached Nevar, he incredulously deleted the report out of hand. Nevar's lack of insight allowed what was in actuality the Rebellion's headquarters of Echo Base to remain hidden from the Empire for more than a year.

Following Echo Base's eventual discovery by Darth Vader in 3 ABY, Nevar commanded the All Terrain Armored Transport Blizzard 2 of Blizzard Force, under the overall direction of General Maximilian Veers, during the subsequent Battle of Hoth. During the battle, Nevar's Blizzard 2 earned the dubious distinction of being the first Imperial walker downed by defending Rebel forces. At some point during the Battle of Hoth, the treacherous Nevar was assassinated.

Biography

An error in judgment

"This ridiculous adventure was a mistake from the beginning!"
―General Nevar[src]

Brigadier General Nevar was an officer of the Imperial Army during the Galactic Civil War.[4] His career was a triumph of nepotism and sycophantic behavior.[2] Circa early 2 ABY,[5] Nevar found himself overseeing an Imperial mission to the remote Outer Rim Territories ice planet Hoth in search of the rogue Force-sensitive Dathomiri Nightsister Kyrisa, who possessed the Force ability to exert control over wild creatures. Imperial Intelligence Director "Blackhole" hoped to capture Kyrisa to take advantage of her powers for the purposes of beast mastery and espionage.[6]

The Imperial expedition to Hoth, led by Imperial Security Bureau agent Jeffren Brek, ultimately failed to capture Kyrisa.[6] Moreover, in the midst of the search for Kyrisa, elements of the Imperial expedition team encountered and battled a small Rebel Alliance outfit, which was attempting to establish an outpost on Hoth's inhospitable surface. The Rebels annihilated the small Imperial force,[7] and Brek's team failed to obtain any real evidence of the Rebels' presence on Hoth. However, when Brek filed his report with Nevar at the conclusion of the operation from aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Devastator, Nevar dismissed Brek's claims of the Rebel presence as foolishness and deleted his reports, disbelieving the Rebellion would even be on such a worthless planet.[6]

What Nevar did not realize was that Brek had actually stumbled across the earliest traces of[6] Echo Base, the Alliance High Command headquarters.[8] Nevar's error in judgment helped keep the Rebel base's existence a secret from the Empire for over a year[6] until its eventual discovery by the Dark Lord Darth Vader.[4]

Battle of Hoth

Blizzard 2

Blizzard 2, the AT-AT walker commanded by General Nevar during the Battle of Hoth

Ironically enough, Nevar was later part of the sizable Imperial force under the command of Darth Vader sent to destroy Echo Base[4] in 3 ABY.[1] Nevar served under General Maximilian Veers during the Imperial invasion of Echo Base as part of the Battle of Hoth. He commanded the All Terrain Armored Transport Blizzard 2 of Blizzard Force, the elite ground assault unit attached to Death Squadron, Vader's personal Star Destroyer fleet.[4]

Nevar's AT-AT was eventually brought down by a Rebel snowspeeder piloted by Wedge Antilles of Rogue Group, using the speeder's harpoon and tow cable to trip the walker's legs. After Blizzard 2 fell,[4] Antilles and another Rebel pilot destroyed the downed walker by targeting its vulnerable neck area.[9] Nevar's Blizzard 2 was the first Imperial walker dispatched during the battle.[4] At some point surrounding the tripping of Blizzard 2, the treacherous Nevar was assassinated.[3]

Personality and traits

Nevar was incompetent[2] and immoral,[10] and his military career was characterized by his own sycophantic behavior.[2] His failure to properly assess the reports of the Rebel presence on Hoth would keep the Empire searching for the hidden Rebel base for more than a year[6] until Echo Base was discovered just prior to the Battle of Hoth in 3 ABY.[1] Out of paranoia, Nevar fortified the exterior of Blizzard 2 with an extra layer of armor. Nevar was also treacherous, and he was assassinated during the Battle of Hoth.[3][4]

Nevar, a Human, had dark hair, dark eyes, and light skin.[2]

Equipment

Brigadier General Nevar wore the standard-issue Imperial officer's uniform. On at least one occasion, he opted not to don the uniform's black gloves.[2]

Behind the scenes

The General Nevar character was first mentioned on the "Blizzard 2" card from the November 1996 Hoth Limited expansion set of the Decipher, Inc. Star Wars Customizable Card Game, which explains that the "treacherous" Nevar commanded the Blizzard 2 AT-AT prior to his assassination. However, the card does not elaborate under what circumstances Nevar's treachery or assassination take place.[3] According to a Star Wars CCG fan site, Nevar, as well as the Ranat character Nevar Yalnal, was named as an anagram of Decipher employee Cheryl Kallenbach's pet dog, Raven.[11] The first illustration of Nevar was included in the September 2009 The Shadow Syndicate expansion set of the Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game,[2] and the character was briefly featured in the game's The Nightsister's Revenge adventure scenario.[6]

Nevar was also mentioned in the August 2004 Inside the Worlds of Star Wars Trilogy and the subsequent October 2005 compilation book Star Wars: Complete Locations among the texts' "Battle of Hoth" geographic layout. Inside the Worlds identifies Nevar as holding the rank of brigadier general, different from the original SWCCG reference and even the later SWGTCG reference, both of which identify him only as a general. Additionally, Inside the Worlds explains that "Wedge…[deploys] Rogue 3's harpoon and tow cable against the AT-AT commanded by Brigadier General Nevar," suggesting that Nevar is still in command of the AT-AT at that time and thus was assassinated during the battle itself, sometime during or after Antilles' attack on Blizzard 2.[4][12]
