The Noolan were a sentient species native to the Outer Rim Territories' Noola system. Their home system became part of the Relgim sector, an area of space explored between 3000–25 BBY. During the Galactic Civil War, the Noolan Otolia Ratiuv, a technician, found her body occupied by the essence of Nana, a Rebel-affiliated member of the Homanan species, following an explosion near a Jedi Force crystal. Nana gained telepathy from the transfer and continued serving in the Alliance to Restore the Republic in her new body. Throughout the Galactic Civil War, the territory surrounding the Noola system remained under Imperial control until 17 ABY, and, following spells under the administration of the New Republic and the Yuuzhan Vong empire, it returned to Imperial control by 40 ABY.

History
The Noolan[1] evolved in the Noola system.[2][3] Their home system was part of the sparsely-populated[4] Relgim sector,[2] an area of the Outer Rim Territories that was explored between 3000–25 BBY.[5] During the Clone Wars, the territory around their home system was part of Separatist space.[6] Following the conclusion of this war, the Noola system remained in Imperial territory until 17 ABY.[7] It was reincorporated into Imperial territory in 40 ABY, following periods of control by the New Republic and the Yuuzhan Vong empire.[8] By 137 ABY, the Noola system had became part of a large portion of the New Territories that supported Roan Fel, the deposed former Emperor who had been betrayed at the conclusion of the Sith–Imperial War by his Sith allies.[9]
Noolan in the galaxy
During the Galactic Civil War, Otolia Ratiuv, a female Noolan technician, was near an explosion that killed the body of a nearby Homanan. Due to the coincidental proximity of a Jedi Force crystal, the Homanan, Nana, was able to transfer her essence into Ratiuv. During this process Nana lost the shape-shifting ability of the Homanans, but she instead developed telepathy. In her new Noolan body, Nana continued agitating for a change in galactic governance through the Alliance to Restore the Republic.[1]
Behind the scenes
Joe Littrell created the Noolan for the article "The New Rogues Gallery: Unsung Heroes of the Rebellion," a roleplaying game supplement published in Polyhedron 59 in 1991. At the time, Polyhedron magazine was unaffiliated with Lucasfilm Ltd., which has left the canon status of the Noolan ambiguous. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the species's place in continuity, the Noola system is referenced in The Essential Atlas, published in 2009.[10] However, according to one of the authors, Jason Fry, "its inclusion shouldn't be taken as a statement of canonicity for anything except the geography."[11] Polyhedron 59 mentioned Noolan only in the singular form, so no plural for the species has yet been specified.
