It served as the capital world of the eponymous Allied Region Nouane, a semi-independent government of 212 star systems that was one of countless mini-empires during the early days of the Galactic Republic. Though isolated, Nouane had a strong presence in the early Republic—Nouanese ministers could be found on worlds throughout the galactic government, and Nouane's libraries attracted many philosophers and artists from the Core Worlds.
In 3963 BBY, Nouane fell to the Mandalorians during the Mandalorian Wars. The beleaguered world turned to the Republic for assistance; once the Mandalorians were driven off the planet, Nouane and the region joined the Republic as a semi-autonomous Allied Region. Throughout the Galactic Civil War thousands of years later, Nouane was a steadfast supporter of the Galactic Empire that had succeeded the Republic. After the Empire was defeated by the New Republic, the region of Nouane became independent.
Description
Since the earliest days of the Galactic Republic, Nouane served as the capital planet of the region of space eponymously named Nouane, a partially-autonomous mini-empire consisting of 212 inhabited star systems in the Inner Rim. The world, located within the Nouane system, fell into the area of space known as the Northern Dependencies.[1]
History
During the beginning stages of the Republic's Rimward expansions, as early as c. 25,000 to 22,000 BBY, Nouane was an isolated—yet known—world surrounded by unexplored space. Despite its remoteness,[1] the planet Nouane was home to an elegant civilization[2] that maintained libraries which drew philosophers and artists from the Core Worlds.[1] The planet was renowned for its statecraft,[2] and its ministers held considerable power on various worlds throughout the Republic.[1] During the Alsakan Conflicts between Coruscant and Alsakan, Nouane was located on a hyperlane under Alsakan control.[2]
In 3963 BBY, during the Mandalorian Wars, Nouane was besieged and conquered by the nomadic Mandalorian warriors, who had passed through the system as part of a Coreward advance halted at the asteroid–ringed Omonoth system.[1] The Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders devastated the world, having despised its society.[2] It was because of the Mandalorians' oppression that Nouane and the rest of the region petitioned for Republic assistance. The Mandalorians were eventually defeated, and the region of Nouane became affiliated with the Republic as an Allied Region, a term used to describe the various mini-empires that were assimilated by the Republic over time. Like all other Allied Regions, Nouane's leader was granted the title of Moff or Grand Moff.[1]
Thousands of years later, in 19 BBY, Republic Supreme Chancellor Palpatine reorganized the galactic government into the first Galactic Empire. All remaining Allied Regions were also restructured into Imperial client states, though they remained semi-autonomous. Nouane stood as a steadfast supporter of the Empire during the Galactic Civil War, and following the Empire's defeat at the hands of the New Republic, Nouane once again became an independent, neutral region. The world itself was largely ignored during subsequent galactic conflicts, to at least the Second Galactic Civil War that occurred decades after the first ended.[1]

Nouane boasted libraries that, during the early years of the Republic, were noted as attracting artists and philosophers from the Core who wished to study in them.[1]
Inhabitants
By 25 ABY, Nouane boasted a population of 1 to 10 billion sentients.[1]
Behind the scenes
Though the region of Nouane was briefly mentioned in 1996's Before the Storm, written by Michael P. Kube-McDowell, it was not until the release of The Essential Atlas, by Jason Fry and Daniel Wallace, in 2009—over a decade after Before the Storm's release—that the existence of the planet Nouane was revealed.
