The Nuruodo family was a Chiss kin-group, one of the Ruling Families of the Chiss Ascendancy; although no absolutely conclusive evidence exists, it is very likely that they were also known as the House Nuruodo and the Second Ruling Family.

According to a study produced by the University of Sanbra in the last years of the New Republic, the Nuruodo lineage was then one of four Ruling Families within the Chiss oligarchy. The results of this study indicated that they had oversight over military affairs and foreign policy, making them the second most important of the Families, after Csapla Family.
More than fifty years earlier, in 27 BBY, the young Thrawn remarked that the Second Ruling Family had some sort of formal authority over military officers of the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force, and considering their numbering and sphere of authority, it is likely that this was the same Family later identified as House Nuruodo. However, at this date, the Second Ruling Family shared these duties with the Eighth Ruling Family, and the overall number of Ruling Families was nine—a situation that apparently held steady until 22 ABY or later.
Later Chiss sources explained the discrepancy as the result of a disagreement sometime between 22 ABY and 29 ABY, in the course of which the number of Ruling Families was reduced from nine to four. There is nothing prima facie impossible about this—the number of Ruling Families had apparently fluctuated between three and twelve over the course of Chiss history—but there are some grounds for suspicion about the accuracy of the evidence on which any reconstruction of these events must be based. Some of what the Chiss said about these events is not consistent with other evidence now known, and sources which claim that Thrawn was a member of the Nuruodo bloodline are almost certainly wrong. Thrawn was, by his own account, born a commoner, and his ennobling came through being matched to the Eighth Ruling Family, not the Second.
As a result of these difficulties, any conclusions about the origins and status of the Nuruodo must remain somewhat tentative at present. To give an idea of the range of possible interpretations that the evidence will bear, it is within the realm of possibility that Nuruodo Family were actually the Eighth Ruling Family of 27 BBY, and subsequently advanced to the position of Second Ruling Family. Alternatively, it may be that the Nuruodo affinity never really existed at all, and the identity was created as part of a campaign of misinformation on the part of the secritive Chiss.
In spite of these caveats, there is some corroberative evidence for the existence of Nuruodo Family and their importance in the Ascendancy during the Yuuzhan Vong War. Most notably, Shawnkyr Nuruodo was identified as a member of the Nuruodo affinity, and as such she served as an informal contact between Thrawn's rogue Household Phalanx and the lineage with most influence over military matters in the Chiss Ascendancy.
