Obo Rin was a controversial sentientologist working for the Galactic Empire.

[edit] Biography

He wrote two editions of the Catalog of Intelligent Life in the Galaxy as a reference for sentientologists and Imperial personnel. This work was commissioned by Lieutenant Pandur, the Imperial Liaison Officer to Korfo II, and Darth Vader himself.

Obo Rin's correspondence with Lieutenant Pandur, Darth Vader, and Major Vontenn, the Imperial Liaison Officer of Sentientology Studies, revealed him to be a very obsequious personality, constantly trying to curry favor with his superiors. He did not, however, endear himself to Major Herrit, an Imperial Intelligence officer who was also involved in the project. This was at least in part due to Rin's extravagant research expenses (totaling nearly one million credits during production of the first installment of the first edition).

Herrit discovered that many of Rin's credentials were falsified or exaggerated. The Major questioned Rin's two doctoral degrees from the Academy at Sab Rufo, not to mention his claim to be Director of Sentientology there, as Herrit believed neither the institution nor the planet Sab Rufo existed. Herrit also discovered that the Three Rings University of Social Sciences, where Rin claimed to have studied under Ditwar Logas, was only a compu-order diploma house, and the Maxet Institute of Technology, where Rin claimed to have studied, was only a vocational school which did not grant the advanced degrees Rin claimed. Despite this, Vader, through his aide Captain Solistein, insisted that Rin continue the work, and that Herrit assist him by obtaining a Duinuogwuin corpse for dissection. Herrit died during that mission, and Rin went on to produce a revised edition of the work without interference.

Obo Rin's completely falsified claims of first contact between the Mon Calamari and galactic civilization occurring during the reign of the Galactic Empire led the Mon Calamari to revile his work. He also falsified claims about the Columi making first contact during the reign of the Empire, despite admitting that they were one of the galaxy's oldest civilizations.

In 16 ABY, a report on the Yevetha compiled by Rin was forwarded by Zeven Mallat of the Imperial Security Bureau to Grand Moff Gann. This may indicate that Rin was still serving the New Order at this date, and if so, he was probably based in Gann's Sector 5 in the Deep Core; but it is also possible that Mallat was merely making use of archived information, perhaps from the Catalog of Intelligent Life in the Galaxy itself. Mallat's introduction also claims that at some point in his career, Rin had been assigned directly to Lord Vader's staff.
