[edit] Characteristics
The main components of the weapon were conductor towers between which the Omega Frost effect was felt, and the effect was that of a wave of cold which froze anything containing moisture instantly.
[edit] History
The weapon was first tested on a small scale on Tatooine, where the towers were placed miles apart and activated causing the desert terrain, and anything on it, to freeze. The planned large scale use of Omega Frost was to place towers at points in the Junction asteroid corridor, lure the Rebel fleet through the corridor, and activate the weapon freezing the entire fleet in an instant. The plan failed when Luke Skywalker destroyed one of the conductor towers, which disabled the weapon.
[edit] Behind the scenes
In the comics, the Omega Frost is shown freezing asteroids in space; this supposedly is a threat to the Rebel spacefleet. Despite space being near-vacuum, and close in temperature to absolute zero (–273.15 °C), it doesn't conduct heat much and thus protection against cold is generally not a major issue unless a space vehicle is in an atmosphere. Presumably the Omega Frost gets around this somehow and rapidly lowers the temperature of a spacecraft despite this, although as space craft have often been seen operating in cold climates like Hoth and also have the ability to produce heat the effectiveness of the Omega Frost on enemy ships is questionable.
A profile of the Omega Frost was featured in the Star Wars Homing Beacon #209, where it was said to be "a conceptual cousin" of the Metal-Crystal Phase Shifter.
