Oppo Rancisis was a Thisspiasian male Jedi Master who served on the Jedi Council during the Invasion of Naboo and the Clone Wars.

Biography

Jedi career

Born on Thisspias,[1] Oppo Rancisis joined the Jedi Order as an infant, and he came to train under the Jedi Master Yaddle. At some point, Rancisis was offered the throne of his homeworld, but he declined it to continue to serve the galaxy as a Jedi. Eventually, Rancisis was made a Jedi Master, and he took a seat in the High Council, the governing body of the Jedi Order.[3]

Rancisis was present in the Council Chamber when Master Qui-Gon Jinn revealed that the Sith had returned and that he believed Anakin Skywalker was the Chosen One destined to bring balance to the Force. Jinn requested that the boy be tested for Jedi training and admitted into the Jedi Order. The Council, at first, refused the request, due to the boy's age and his emotional attachments to his mother, but, after Jinn's death during the Battle of Naboo, they granted his dying wish: that Jinn's Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, be allowed to train Skywalker.[4]

Separatist Crisis

During the Separatist Crisis, Rancisis continued to serve on the Jedi Council. He was present when the Jedi High Council assigned Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi to track down the bounty hunter Jango Fett and find out who he was working for while Obi-Wan's padawan Anakin Skywalker was ordered to protect Senator Padmé Amidala and take her back to Naboo.[5]

Bardotta Crisis

Supreme Chancellor Palpatine informed the Jedi High Council of Queen Julia of Bardotta's request for Jar Jar Binks to assist her after the disappearance of Dagoyan Masters. Oppo, and the rest of the council discussed the matter and Mace Windu volunteered to accompany Binks.[6]

While on a mission to uncover the death of Master Sifo-Dyas who ordered the creation of the clone army. Rancisis was present when Kenobi and Skywalker reported that Count Dooku was behind with the creation of the clone army.[7]

Specter of the past

Rancisis was present when Grand Master Yoda claimed to hear the voice of a long-dead Qui-Gon. Rancisis along with the other members of the Council participated in meditation in order to see if the Masters could sense Jinn's presence.[8]

Towards the end of the war, Rancisis was present when Kenobi told the Council that Sugi arms dealers were attempting to sell an enormous kyber crystal to General Grievous on Utapau. When Kenobi and Skywalker reported to the Council after the destruction of the crystal, Yoda recalled stories of when the Jedi and Sith fought for control of the galaxy using weapons powered by kyber crystals.[9]

Oppo Rancisis made his first canonical appearance in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace as a background character with no speaking lines and was was designed by storyboard artist Benton Jew. Oppo was seen again in the 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones again as a background character on the Jedi High Council without any speaking lines.

Rancisis was set to make another appearance in Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series in the Sixth season and Legacy project however had no speaking lines but where his lightsaber would be visible; however, the show was canceled before the blade made an appearance.

Designs for the lightsaber were based on Count Dooku's lightsaber and were revealed by Dave Filoni and Pablo Hidalgo in their The Untold Clone Wars panel at Celebration Anaheim in 2015.[10]

He made his first canon novelization appearance in the 2015 Dark Disciple novel, that was based upon eight episodes planned for the unfinished seventh and eighth seasons of The Clone Wars television series.
