Ostrine was a mineral found on the planet Hargeeva. It had the property of absorbing great amounts of heat, lending to its use in armor plating for stormtroopers and other Imperial soldiers. It was also once used to make blades for melee weapons during the Dark Wars. Its properties were multiplied by ten-fold when Ketrian Altronel discovered that crystalline manipulation and plas-bonding of certain trace elements modified it, resulting in the mineral being able to freeze objects instantaneously that came in contact with it.

Defecting to the Rebel Alliance, Altronel would help increase the firepower of T-65 X-wing starfighters by adding the formula to the housings of its laser cannons.
