Owen was the brother of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan had vague memories of playing with Owen in his youth before being taken to Coruscant for training. It is recorded that Kenobi might have visited him and the rest of his family occasionally later in his life.[2]

The idea that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Owen Lars, the adoptive uncle of Luke Skywalker, were brothers, was introduced in the screenplay of the 1983 movie Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, but did not make it in the final cut.[3] The movie novelization, however, did include a line in which Kenobi referred to "[his] brother Owen."[4] Similarly, Owen Lars was explicitely described as the "brother of Obi-Wan Kenobi" in the Premiere Limited set of the Star Wars Customizable Card Game released by Decipher, Inc. in 1995.[5] Said brother named Owen was later alluded to in the 1999 novel Jedi Apprentice: The Hidden Past, although he was not clearly identified as the guardian of Skywalker in that context.[2] However, the 2002 movie Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones revealed Luke's uncle as Anakin Skywalker's step-brother, establishing him as someone different from Kenobi's brother.[6] Further mention of Owen was eliminated from later printings of the Return of the Jedi novelization, leaving Obi-Wan's brother as a mostly unexplored character.
