The Pakuuni Pirates was the proper name for the criminal organizations formed from both pirates and smugglers from the Pakuuni system, around the same time of the Battle of Hoth which caused intergalactic trade there and nearby systems like Newland to be difficult, some would say dangerous at best. Vice-Admiral Thrawn, however, set up a new installation, outpost NL-1, there from which he restored order to the system.

The Pakuuni Pirates decided to ally themselves with the rebels against the Empire trying to restore their business in the Sector.

Attempts to stop Thrawn from establishing and securing the new base through the use of both the Rebels and Pirates forces failed.
