A particle shield was a type of deflector shield that could repel solid objects.[1] It was used on Immobilizer 418 cruisers in conjunction with ray shields.[2]
Description[]
Particle shields were generated from a particle shield projector, forming an invisible field that would start mere molecules from the hull and extend to envelop the entire ship. They were commonly used on both civilian and military starships as their primary protection against micro-meteroids[3] and other solid space debris[1] that, although tiny in size, could easily penetrate hull plating due to the extreme speeds required for interstellar travel. As particle shields would deflect all solid objects regardless of direction of travel, they had to be carefully calibrated to drop for fractions of a second at a time whenever a projectile weapon (such as a proton torpedo) was fired, an escape pod or other auxiliary craft was launched, or the occupants simply wished to exit their ship via airlock.[3]
History[]
During the Imperial era, starship owners had to apply for a special permit before acquiring some particularly powerful particle shield projector models to ensure the Imperial Navy maintained weapons superiority over civilian craft.[3]
