Geography
Edit
Pembric II was a warm and humid planet that was bedeviled with a constant misty drizzle. It was largely covered in wetlands and mudflats, and had little in the way of natural resources. However, the planet boasted impressive scenery, including beaches and a volcanic field.
History
Edit
Settlement
Edit
Pembric II was originally a meteorite-scarred planet, and was terraformed to become an agricultural colony. The terraforming process was flawed, however, and rendered the planet inhabitable, but unpleasant. The boggy terrain was totally unsuited to agriculture, and engineers had to work hard to construct the spaceport and city. Despite having scenery that could have been exploited for tourism, the planet's remote location made that impossible. However, the criminals that frequented the planet used the environment to change the planet into a gangster's resort. Cantinas, museums and entertainment complexes opened up to support the growing industry, and the corporate government turned a blind eye to the black-marketeering and smuggling that carried on as long as the planet's economy prospered. The Pembric Security Legion, the local police force, became known for corruption.
Imperial control
Edit
When Moff Kentor Sarne took control of the Kathol sector, he took an interest in the planet, mining the hfredium deposits in the Pembric asteroid field. The criminal tourism industry was supplanted by an industrial one, as the ore mined from the belt was processed on the planet and shipped to Imperial arms manufacturers. Sarne left the planet alone during his rule, finding it useful to have a gateway into the criminal underworld of the sector, although he used the planet as a training ground for his troops.
In the hands of criminals
Edit
As Sarne retreated into the deeper reaches of the Kathol sector, the Bombaasa Cartel took control of the planet, and purged the planet of Imperial officials and sympathizers. With the threat of New Republic action against the planet in his mind, Crev Bombaasa installed a puppet government that claimed to be pro-Imperial in an effort to dissuade any New Republic interest in the planet. The population were supportive of a change of government, but not the one that was installed. Many citizens, shipped in to support the Imperial-backed industries felt abandoned and provisionally supported the New Republic. Many civilians wanted to leave the planet, but the Cartel discouraged emigration by charging high exit tariffs and transit visas.
In 8 ABY, the New Republic corvette FarStar traveled to the planet to talk to Breslin Drake, manager of the ThrusterBurn tapcafe. Because of the planet's criminal leanings, the FarStar hid in the asteroid field, and a ground mission in the Aegis-class combat shuttle landed undercover in the spaceport. However, their cover had been blown because the FarStar had been identified by a mining outpost in the asteroid belt. Although opposed by Bombaasa and the Security Legion, the crew managed to locate Drake and, with his help, rescued the slicer Gaelin to help them disable the traps Sarne had hardwired in the corvette.
