The Planetary Security Forces (PSF) were organizations that served various member planets of the Galactic Republic and were charged with both planetary defense as well as law enforcement.

HistoryEdit

Some forces, such as the Coruscant Security Force, had been in place since the earliest days of the Old Republic. Other famous forces included the Garde d'Azure, the Lantillian Planetary Security Forces, the Greater Plooriod Wardens, the Iseno Rangers, and the Hertae Home Brigade. Most forces consisted of a core group of dedicated beings that defended their chosen star systems from both neighboring worlds as well as pirates. Each Planetary Security Force was considered apart from the Republic Military and maintained their own traditions.

In the final years of the Old Republic, the different Planetary Security Forces became more and more estranged from one another. This partly stemmed from the fact that Senators representing the systems that were patrolled by those Security Forces tended to use the groups as personal security forces with their actions leading to these defenders being dispatched on simple patrol missions or even being used as glorified honor guards for the Senator. In those years leading to the Clone Wars, the Planetary Security Forces suffered many budget cuts as well as conflicting orders from the Galactic Senate. This led to a number of Security Forces being disbanded as a result of these actions.

Upon the Declaration of a New Order, the Galactic Empire was formed which saw Emperor Palpatine merging the Planetary Security Forces into the Imperial Military. The Empire began to change the many military traditions of the Security Forces which saw career officer families known as Generationals being either forced to adopt the new competitive ruthless system based on political ambitions or be passed over for those with those qualities.

After the Galactic Empire took over the Planetary Security Forces into their military, a glut of the Planetary Security Forces' uniforms and equipment, including DH-17 blaster pistols and A280 blaster rifles, ended up becoming available and flooding the black market, which eventually found its way into the hands of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Because of this, Imperial propaganda rarely saw fit to mention the irony behind their actions in taking over the Planet Security Forces resulting in effectively outfitting many Rebel irregulars.^[1]

Behind the scenesEdit

The Planetary Security Forces involvement in arming the Rebel Alliance, and the Empire's ironically aiding them in the armament through their actions of taking them over, was established in The Essential Guide to Warfare as a minor retcon relating to the Rebel Troopers' uniforms being one and the same as the Alderaanian uniforms. Jason Fry, in his endnotes for the book, explained that he made the retcon because he felt specifically labelling it as Alderaanian armor was making the Star Wars galaxy much smaller than it should be, and justified it in-universe with the explanation that it would have been a political disaster had Alderaan been discovered in arming the Rebel Alliance by the Galactic Empire, the planet's existential threat.
