Characteristics
Edit
The w-165 was powerful enough to blast an Imperial-class Star Destroyer into pieces with a single volley. The platform on which it rested on, which was 150 meters in diameter, contained the defensive systems, as well as room for the crew of nearly 50 people and the 50 meter-diameter reactor core, which generated enough power to allow the weapon to shoot once each 10 seconds.
This turbolaser could effectively target enemies through the use of its long-range sensors that were located on the platform. Additional targeting information was provided by sensor arrays on orbiting satellites. This sensor information could then be fed into the global processing network, which could in turn provide firing vectors for additional turbolasers. This system allowed quick and efficient planetary defense.
The w-165 combated overheating dangers by employing 48 overload dispersal tubes, which allowed excess heat to be absorbed or redirected. The w-165 was defended by 4 meters of deep armor-plating and several deflector shield projectors. It was capable of turning a full 360 degrees and swinging in a 180 degree arc.
History
Edit
The original KDY design for a surface-to-space weapon, the m-68 planetary magnapulse cannon, turned out to be more effective at surface-to-surface combat, so the w-165 turbolaser was created to fulfill its original role.[1] In spite of a ten million credit price and a limited field of fire provided by a single emplacement, many civilized planets purchased the weapon, often constructing a network of these turbolasers, v-150 Planet Defender ion cannons, and planetary shield generators in order to adequately protect a world.
