As intergalactic travel developed and planets began to forge diplomatic ties, it became clear that center points on a planet were needed to carry out planetary governmential business. A Planetary capital was a city that was the center of that planet's intergalactic representation. It was common for these cities to experience rapid growth during a planet's initial exploits into galactic commerce and affairs.

Usually, the city would be home to the planet's Senatorial Representive in the Senate on Coruscant, and embassies of other planets, most commonly those whose races had immigrated to the planet.
