The title Play it again, Figrin D'an is a pun on the famous line Play it again, Sam, from the 1946 movie A Night in Casablanca, featuring the Marx Brothers. The line is commonly (but mistakenly) believed to be from the 1942 movie Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart.
The story itself seems to have been at least partly inspired by the plot of Casablanca, as both stories feature "signed letters of transit" as plot devices.
