Polygamy

From Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki.

(Redirected from Polygyny)

Polygamy was the act of having several wives at a time. Because of the low male birthrate among Cereans, it was a generally accepted practice on Cerea. Even Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi was allowed to have multiple wives, despite the Jedi Order's tenets that forbade any emotional attachment. He was known to have had four wives, two of which were known as Shea and Mawin.

Polygamy was also practiced by the Kaleesh.

[edit] Behind the scenes

Polygamy comes from the Greek poly "many" and gamy "marriage."

Polygamy occurs in two forms: polygny (multiple wives) and polyandry (multiple husbands). The majority of polygamous societies adopt a polygynous social organization, but polyandry is not uncommon, especially among matriarchal societies.
