Ponies were hardy creatures used as mounts by the Ewoks of the Endor Moon.
Biology and appearance
Ponies were creatures that could have spotted, shaggy coats of hair. They were hardy and well-suited for long-distance travel.[1]
Behavior and intelligence
Ponies could be domesticated for transportation, including as hunting mounts.[2]
History
Ponies originated somewhere in the galaxy, and were introduced to the Endor Moon by human scouting parties at some point prior to the Galactic Civil War. The native Ewoks, diminutive sentients who lived high in the trees, started using them as mounts for hunting on the ground level.[2]
Behind the scenes
The made-for-TV movies Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure (1984)[3] and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1985) depicted Earth ponies, along with full-sized horses, as mounts and beasts of burden for the Ewoks and other inhabitants of Endor.[4] The Ewok word for pony, in Caravan of Courage, is shown to be "gaupa", while a full-sized horse is a "pulga".[3]
While both movies have been relegated to the Star Wars Legends continuity, and are no longer considered part of the current Star Wars canon, a mention in 2015's Ultimate Star Wars brought the pony back into the Star Wars universe.[1]
