Qui-Gon Jinn was a revered, yet maverick and unconventional Human male Jedi Master. He was the Padawan to Count Dooku, and the mentor to Obi-Wan Kenobi and briefly Anakin Skywalker. Jinn often placed himself in conflict with the Jedi High Council. He was deeply attuned to the Living Force, which contributed to him frequently taking side trips to help seemingly weak and useless life-forms. Despite his opposition to the council, he was regarded by many Jedi as sharp-witted and possessing great wisdom.

Jinn served the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order his entire life, participating in actions against the Nebula Front, most famously during the Invasion of Naboo. It was Jinn who discovered the Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker, on Tatooine during this crisis and was largely responsible for championing his training. Even after his death at the hands of Darth Maul, he played a vital role in the legacy of the Jedi Order.

BiographyEdit

Early lifeEdit

Born almost a century before the Battle of Yavin,^[3] the Human male individual Qui-Gon Jinn was taken as an infant to Coruscant to train and become a Jedi. He maintained some ties with his planet of birth, and even once obtained a special worn stone from his homeworld's River of Light.^[10] At the age of eight, Jinn befriended a fellow trainee, Tahl. Over the years the two became the best of friends, along with other students including Clee Rhara.^[11] At ten years old, Jinn participated in the Exhibition Day Tournament, where young students are encouraged to perform their skills so that they may be taken as an apprentice to one of the Knights or Jedi Masters. It was at this exhibition that Dooku first saw Jinn's lightsaber skills. Dooku took Jinn as his Padawan a short time afterward.^[source?]

Together, Dooku and Jinn embarked on numerous missions across the galaxy. On one notable mission, the two were sent to accompany Senator Blix Annon on a diplomatic assignment. However, space pirates infiltrated their starship. Their leader turned out to be Lorian Nod, a failed Jedi with whom Dooku was once close friends. The two battled and Dooku was overwhelmed with anger. When it became apparent that Dooku intended to kill helpless Lorian Nod, it was Jinn's words that stopped him from doing so.^[12] Some time following this assignment, Dooku and Jinn were given their final mission as master and apprentice, which would last two years. Upon returning from this mission, Jinn was reunited with Tahl. As his final words for Jinn as a student, Dooku proposed that Jinn had one weakness and that it was; his compassion for all life. Dooku warned him that it is an inevitability that betrayal would come from a friend.^[source?]

Knighthood and XanatosEdit

Both Jinn and Tahl quickly became Jedi Knights. When the Jedi Council suggested that he take a Padawan learner, Jinn chose not to. He felt that he was not ready and over the next few years, took on solo missions for the Order. During this time, Jinn discovered a young boy from the planet Telos IV named Xanatos who exhibited a strong connection to the Force. Jinn took Xanatos to the Jedi Temple for training, despite the fact that the child was older than the accepted age for training. Over the next two years,^[source?] as Xanatos was trained at the Temple, Jinn took Feemor, whose training was almost complete, as his apprentice. After successfully guiding Feemor to Knighthood, Jinn became a Jedi Master (59 BBY),^[source?] and soon Xanatos became his newest apprentice.^[13][14]

Over the years, many members of the Jedi Council, including Grand Master Yoda, expressed their concerns about Xanatos, and decided to give one final test before granting him the title of Jedi Knight. Jinn, Xanatos, Tahl, and Masterless Padawan Orykan Tamarik were sent to Telos, Xanatos's homeworld, where Xanatos's father, Crion, had become a tyrant, controlling the planet with an iron grip.^[15] Xanatos was tempted by his father's wealth and power and after the death of his sister Nason,^[16] he joined Crion, hoping to rule together.^[17] Leading the planet into a civil war, Crion was confronted by Jinn, who was forced to kill the governor to save Orykan. Upon doing so, Xanatos became enraged and took a ring from his father's finger, searing hot from the fire Crion fell in. He branded it into his cheek, creating a broken-circle scar. Swearing his revenge, Xanatos fled.^[18]

Upon returning to the Temple, Jinn blamed himself for Xanatos's failure, and renounced his success in training his first Padawan.^[13] He vowed not to take another Padawan for the rest of his life. Tahl tried to comfort Jinn by accompanying him to the training world of Ragoon VI. However, Jinn found it hard to recover from the events that had unfolded around Xanatos.^[source?]

For the next few years, Qui-Gon returned to solo missions. Yet, he would occasionally work with others on various assignments. Jinn and Tahl were credited for accomplishing several missions, including successfully overseeing the first democratic elections of New Apsolon.^[source?]

Taking another apprenticeEdit

Initially, Qui-Gon was worried about taking another apprentice, as his last apprentice fell to the dark side. In 44 BBY, 9 years since Xanatos' betrayal, Yoda encouraged Jinn to take on another apprentice. Though Jinn was already reluctant, he agreed to observe a small tournament among a group of the Temple's older students, which included Bruck Chun and Obi-Wan Kenobi. He took notice of Kenobi's skills, but shortly following the tournament, he left heading for Bandomeer, by orders of the Supreme Chancellor.^[19]

On the transport ship Monument heading to Bandomeer, Jinn was reunited with Kenobi, who was also being sent to Bandomeer to begin work in the Agricultural Corps. On the transport, Jinn and Kenobi helped defend a group of Arcona from the criminal organization, Offworld Mining Corporation. After putting an end to the tense situation, the two arrived on Bandomeer, where Jinn received a letter signed by Xanatos. It became apparent that Bandomeer was not in need of Jedi assistance, it had all been organized by Xanatos, who was revealed to be the leader of Offworld, whose mining operations terrorized everyone inhabiting the planet^[19]

Jinn sent Kenobi off to his Agri-Corps duties, while he planned to meet with Xanatos, not as old adversaries, but as ambassadors, working to find an agreement between Offworld and Bandomeer. However, Xanatos planned to sabotage their meeting and kill Jinn. Once again with the help of Kenobi, Jinn attempted to end Xanatos's acts of terror. Jinn dueled with his former apprentice, and though they ended Offworld's business on Bandomeer, Xanatos was able to escape. During their situation with Xanatos, Jinn discovered Kenobi's true potential, and took him as his new Padawan learner.

As master and apprentice, Jinn and Kenobi were sent on various missions across the galaxy, to worlds such as Gala and Phindar. One mission, in which the two rescued a blinded Tahl from the war-torn world of Melida/Daan, led to Kenobi's temporary resignation from the Jedi Order.^[source?] Also over this time, the two Jedi had more encounters with Xanatos, who, with the help of the bitter Padawan, Bruck Chun, nearly assassinated Yoda within the Jedi Temple itself.^[20] After dueling with the Dark Jedi and chasing him to Telos, Jinn and Kenobi's final confrontation with Xanatos resulted in his suicide, jumping into a pool of acid instead of surrendering. Though a major threat to the Jedi Order was now eliminated, it was a disturbing ending to a dark chapter in Jinn's life.^[21]

Along with other Jedi such as Tyvokka, Plo Koon, Tholme and his Padawan Quinlan Vos, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan fought in one of the largest galactic conflicts prior to the Clone Wars—the Stark Hyperspace War. It was the first of many times that the two would encounter the Trade Federation, though it would be one of the few times that they were defending them.^[22]

As Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's relationship matured, they formed a close father-and-son like bond with each other. Three decades after first meeting Lorian Nod with his former master, Dooku, Jinn once again faced off with the failed Jedi on Junction V, and once again Nod was incarcerated for his crimes.^[12] Qui-Gon continually passed on as much knowledge as he could to Kenobi. Lessons ranged from the importance of the Living Force to the reasons why the Jedi Order discouraged romantic relationships.^[11]

During the Mandalorian Civil War Jinn and Kenobi were sent on an extended mission to Mandalore spending a year there protecting the young Duchess, Satine Kryze, from hostile insurgents threatening her world.^[23][24]

As time went on, Jinn and Kenobi accomplished various other missions across the galaxy. On Kegan, they discovered the Force-sensitivity of the future Jedi Knight, Olana Chion. In the Rutan system, the two Jedi acted as ambassadors to settle a conflict between the world of Rutan and its moon of Senali.^[source?]

Jenna Zan Arbor's prisonerEdit

In 43 BBY, Jinn and Kenobi investigated strange murders in which the bodies of the victims were drained entirely of their blood. This investigation led them to meet the famed scientist Jenna Zan Arbor. Eventually, they discovered that the bounty hunter Ona Nobis was behind the murders, but they still did not know who her client was. Upon confronting Nobis, Jinn managed to get aboard her ship and was immediately hit with her blasterfire. Jinn was captured and taken to Jenna Zan Arbor. Zan Arbor, who was studying the genetic traits of Force-sensitives (possibly to discover a way to genetically engineer Force-sensitivity into normal beings), began further experiments on Jinn, draining his blood and torturing him to test his limits. Kenobi, with the help of Tahl, Adi Gallia, and Siri Tachi, managed to infiltrate Zan Arbor's labs and free Jinn. It wasn't long before Zan Arbor was caught. The deranged scientist was imprisoned and the bounty hunter, Ona Nobis, was presumed to be dead after a fight with Kenobi.^[source?]

In 42 BBY, Jinn and Kenobi were faced with troubles of the past yet again. Vox Chun, the father of the Dark Padawan, Bruck Chun, hired the lawyer Sano Sauro to prosecute Kenobi for Bruck's accidental death. The trial that followed led Jinn's apprentice into an emotionally difficult time, even after he was cleared of the charges.^[25]

Forbidden loveEdit

In 41 BBY, tensions began to rise in Qui-Gon's friendship with Tahl. Tahl had recently taken Bant Eerin, one of Kenobi's close friends, as her Padawan learner, and Qui-Gon tried to press his advice onto her. The tension made the two aware of mutual feelings of attraction toward each other. However, they put the teachings of the Jedi Code first, and did their best to ignore them.^[11]

While training with Kenobi on Ragoon VI, Jinn began to suffer from visions of Tahl in potentially fatal circumstances. Upon returning to Coruscant, Jinn requested the Council allowed him to be sent with Tahl on her next mission, to New Apsolon. Tahl, however, declined his offer and proceeded alone, leaving Eerin behind at the Temple. Three weeks passed and Tahl had not been heard from. Jinn and Kenobi went to New Apsolon (against the orders of the Council) to discover what may have happened to Tahl. After a lengthy search, they found her, safe and in perfect health. Upon seeing each other again, Jinn and Tahl openly admitted their attraction for one another. They promised to prioritize the mission and resolve their emotions once the assignment had been completed.^[11]

However, a short while after, Tahl was presumed missing once more. This time she was in apparent danger, and had been kidnapped by a New Apsolon rebel named Balog. When Jinn and Kenobi found Balog, he had drugged Tahl. The Jedi managed to rescue her, but despite Jinn's attempts to heal her through the Force, Tahl passed away.^[source?]

The death of Tahl drove Jinn into a state of depression and a rise in strong dark side emotions became apparent. He blamed himself for Tahl's death and recalled his past with Xanatos. He swore revenge on Balog and made it his priority to track him down. Kenobi, who was worried about his master, tried to assure Jinn that he made ample efforts to save her, but Jinn refused to accept Kenobi's reassurance. After tracking down Balog, Jinn cornered him and attempted to kill him, however he was interrupted by a voice pleading that he not follow through.^[source?]

Due to this, Jinn become aware of the path he was following and abruptly deactivated his lightsaber, repressed his anger, and reflected upon his actions. After taking Balog into custody, Jinn thanked Kenobi for stopping him, only to hear from his apprentice that it was not him who said those words. It was then Jinn realized that the voice he had heard; was the voice of Tahl. The Jedi returned to Coruscant and gave Tahl a proper funeral.^[source?]

Jinn and his apprentice would also help the Wookiees Attichitcuk and Chewbacca establish a colony on the Kashyyyk moon of Alaris Prime, and would later help drive the Trade Federation off it.^[26]

Changing timesEdit

Despite being saved from falling to the dark side, Jinn appeared different in personality following Tahl's death, and a great deal of change also occurred around him following her loss. Jocasta Nu, another of Jinn's friends, succeeded Tahl as the head archivist of the Jedi Archives, and the Nautolan Jedi, Kit Fisto took Tahl's place as Eerin's master.

After Jinn and Kenobi remained at the Jedi Temple for some time, the Jedi Council sent them to the planet Vorzyd IV. The planet was involved in a dispute with its neighbor, Vorzyd V. In the end, the two Jedi discovered that the sabotage Vorzyd IV was experiencing was from its disenfranchised youth, the Freelies and were able to resolve the dispute. While Jinn negotiated with Vorzyd IV's leader, he let his Padawan pursue his own path to uncover the secret of the Freelies.^[27]

On a mission to protect a young boy named Talesan Fry, Jinn and Kenobi were paired with Adi Gallia and Siri Tachi. The mission, which resulted in Jinn and Gallia being separated from Kenobi and Siri, led to the discovery of romantic feelings between the two Padawans. Jinn detected these emotions and warned Kenobi of his own example with Tahl, and the consequences of losing a loved one.^[11]

More missions for the two Jedi continued to follow. Jinn and Kenobi met Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum, who would call upon the two Jedi in particular for future assignments. The two also encountered the bounty hunter Aurra Sing^[28], and fought alongside Mace Windu, Plo Koon, and other Jedi against the Yinchorri.^[29]

During this time period, in the year 38 BBY, Jinn and his apprentice went to Yorn Skot to save the luxury liner Aurorient Express. The two Jedi jumped onto the hull from their ship and encountered Fastlatch-class security droids. They crashed into a window and fell amidst a party. Jinn used a mind trick to convince the crowd to bring them to the ship's Captain. They revealed to the Captain that the ship was falling into the atmosphere, which surprised him. The Captain then called on Chief Bouyardy, who at the time was dealing with more Fastlatch security droids. The two Jedi went to assist him, and after rescuing Bouyardy, the man told them that the droids had come from cargo lot 44C. They then went to see Chief Purser Waverton, who revealed that the passenger Saul Moegantz had rented the lot. Moegantz said that the lot was supposed to be survapierre, not drois. Waverton then said the lot had been loaded by the Shik Podlong Foahl. They confronted him, and Foahl ran away. When cornered, he threatened to blow a core bomb, but was shot by Waverton.^[30]

The group then tried to find the core bomb. Jinn talked with Bouyardy while Kenobi trailed Waverton. The Jedi confronted him and brought him to the captain. The crew was able to reactivate the ship's sensors, which revealed the Aurorient Express was on a collision course with the Yorn Skot Mining Station. Traces of the core bomb were found in Madam Rhoden's cabin. The Jedi went to confront her and found that the bomb was missing. An evacuation was ordered. Clode Rhoden then met the Jedi on the bridge. He revealed the whole thing was a setup to kill his wife, by planting the core bomb on her life pod and sending it into the mining station. Rather than leave the Jedi as witnesses, he sent a Fastlatch droid after them. Jinn managed to take Rhoden as a hostage while the Captain blew up the life pod early to save the people on the mining station. Later, the passengers were retrieved by a rescue frigate. Rhoden was taken into custody, and it was revealed that Moegantz had rescued Madam Rhoden from the pod. Kenobi asked how Jinn was going to prosecute those responsible, but his Master responded that they could and must. Behind them, pressure pirates captured the abandoned liner, which promptly exploded due to a second core bomb.^[30]

The next year, in 37 BBY, Jinn and Kenobi were dispatched on a mission to locate a valuable cargo ship that had disappeared. Their search took them to Ord Mantell, and brought them to confront the land baron Taxer Sundown. On the mission, Jinn befriended the native Mantellian Savrip, which aided him in completing his mission on the lawless world.^[31]

The Jin'HaEdit

One time Kenobi was sent on a patrol mission in the Coruscant Underworld, where he skirmished with the Black Heth gang. Afterward, Kenobi was sent to rescue an informant from the Black Heth. Jinn communicated with Kenobi during the mission to inform him of his objective. After Kenobi rescued him, the informant gave the Jedi intelligence that the Black Heth were smuggling weapons from the Jin'ha. Later, Kenobi surveyed a Black Heth weapons delivery, where he fought Jin'Ha warriors. Jinn was in contact with his apprentice at the time. After that mission, Jinn watched Kenobi's duel with Master Saesee Tiin.^[32]

As a result, the Jedi Council sent Masters Koon and Koth to the Jin'Ha homeworld, Obredaan, in a Consular-class cruiser. When the Council lost contact with the two Masters, it sent Jinn and Kenobi to investigate. Master and apprentice fought through the Jin'Ha warriors in a swamp, where they found the crashed starship. Jinn sensed two Jedi nearby, so he went to search for them and sent Kenobi to a nearby cortosis mine. By the time Kenobi gathered a sample and fought his way out of the mine, Jinn had rescued the two Masters; together, they fought the last of the Jin'Ha resistance at the mine. At the end of the fight a Trade Federation gunship flew overhead, causing them to wonder if the Trade Federation was involved in the Jin'Ha's operation. After the mission, Jinn watched over Kenobi's duel with Master Koon.^[32]

A cloak of darknessEdit

Both Jedi would later fight against the Nebula Front terrorist organization. At the Eriadu Trade Summit on Eriadu, Jinn and Kenobi were successful in defending Supreme Chancellor Valorum, but did not prevent the deaths of the rest of the Trade Federation Directorate, allowing the Neimoidians to take control of the Federation.^[33]

Blockade of NabooEdit

AmbassadorsEdit

In 32 BBY, Qui-Gon and Kenobi were sent to the planet Naboo onboard the cruiser Radiant VII to resolve a crisis. The Trade Federation, in protest to recent taxation laws, had assembled a blockade of the planet with a fleet of Lucrehulk-class battleships.^[34] The two Jedi were sent as ambassadors at the behest of Supreme Chancellor Valorum to reach a peaceful settlement.^[4]

Shortly after their arrival on the Federation flagship Saak'ak, the two Jedi were met by the protocol droid TC-14, who escorted them to a conference room. As they were waiting for the Trade Federation leadership, the Radiant VII was destroyed and the conference chamber was flooded with dioxis gas. They survived the gas, and easily defeated the OOM security battle droids assigned to dispose of their bodies. The two Jedi fought their way through the corridors of the vessel until they reached the bridge. Jinn tried to cut through the bridge's blast doors, but the arrival of the two Federation destroyer droids P-59 and P-60 forced them to flee. Jinn and Kenobi became separated when the younger Jedi fell through a grating into the air vents. They met back up in the hangar, and Jinn ordered him to stow aboard a separate landing craft so they could meet back up on the surface.^[35]

After escaping from the conference room, the Jedi^[36] fought through the nearby corridors and through a command center. They then took a conveyor belt to a hangar, where they dueled a Cargo Loader Droid. It crashed into the wall after taking several lightsaber strikes, and the two Jedi continued through the hole and deeper into the vessel, ending up in the static discharge room. They traversed the space and several more corridors before ending up in a large void space. There they dueled a droid starfighter, deflecting its laser blasts back at it until it crashed. They then continued through the Saak'ak.^[37]

The two Jedi fought their way through the flagship to reach the ship's bridge to discover why the Viceroy wanted them dead. Leaving the conference room, they moved through the hallways and to the hangar, where they came under fire from the hangar turret. Taking cover under the wreckage of the Radiant VII, Jinn ordered Kenobi to cover him while he disabled the turret. When the turret was disabled, the two Jedi continued to the bridge. Three droid starfighters harassed the Jedi from the side of the hangar. The two Jedi then moved into a cargo bay and went through a battle droid factory. In the factory they faced two more droid starfighters and bomb droids. In the next hallway, they were trapped by force fields. Jinn ordered Kenobi to jump up into the ventilation shafts. The two fought through the shafts, traveling along by riding the updrafts at two points, and came out in a walkway, where they found the invasion fleet in the hangar. They ended up in in an observation deck before going to the bridge. Kenobi covered Jinn while the latter cut through the blast doors. Kenobi destroyed the battle droids and bomb droid interlocutors.^[32]

When the two destroyer droids ambushed them, Jinn recognized that they were in a standoff, and ordered Kenobi to go. The two Jedi used Force speed to escape and went into the ventilation shafts. They ended up near the hangar, and Jinn ordered Kenobi to stow aboard a landing craft as the Federation launched their invasion fleet.^[4] Kenobi boarded one of the landing craft, and Jinn contacted him and ordered him to sabotage the ship's communications to conceal his presence. Once Kenobi had done so, Jinn ordered him to disable the craft's engines to force it to crash. After Kenobi had done so, he went to the MTT storage bay to hide. There he encountered a new type of assassin droid. Kenobi destroyed it and informed Jinn of the development. Jinn then ordered his Padawan to hide until the ship was on Naboo.^[32]

Onto Naboo's soilEdit

On Naboo's surface, Qui-Gon met the Gungan individual Jar Jar Binks, saving him from a Multi-Troop Transport. As a result, Binks pledged a life debt to the Jedi Master.^[4]

After Binks met Jinn, he left the Jedi Master and later met his apprentice in another part of the swamp. Binks led Kenobi back to Jinn,^[35] where the group was attacked by Federation Single Trooper Aerial Platforms. Jinn chided his apprentice for shorting out his lightsaber in the swamp water, then turned his attention to Binks, asking how to get to the Queen. Binks reluctantly agreed to lead them to his former home, the underwater city of Otoh Gunga.^[4]

Continuing into the swamps and battling Trade Federation forces, they^[38] They fought through B1 battle droids and OOM security droids and avoided a stampede caused by a Multi-Troop Transport. The two Jedi escorted Binks past 20 battle droids and a half-built droid camp. Binks panicked and ran off, leaving the Jedi to Force Jump up mushrooms to reach the top of the tree and the nearby plateaus, which they traversed. After the plateaus, the two Jedi fought through more droids around a command center. Following the path past the camp, they eventually crossed a bridge and moved into a cave, where they faced a Slaatik hagworm. The hagworm tried to slam into the Jedi several times, and when that failed, released a poison gas from its mouth at them. The hagworm also sent kreetles to harass the Jedi, although the Jedi succeeded in hurting the hagworm and driving it off. They then rejoined Binks and continued their journey.^[37]

Binks led them into the swamp and the two Jedi followed after donning their A99 aquata breathers. They entered the bubble surrounding Otoh Gunga, where they were met by a patrol led by Captain Roos Tarpals, and were brought before Boss Rugor Nass and his advisors. Jinn used a mind trick to convince Nass to lend them a tribubble bongo and a path to Theed. Nass agreed and told them to travel through the planet's core. Jinn was also able to free Binks, who was going to be punished for returning from his exile. Binks and the two Jedi were able to navigate through the porous core, evading several sea monsters, and end up near Theed, surfacing on the Solleu River. By that time, though, Theed had fallen to the Trade Federation.^[4]

In TheedEdit

After surfacing on the Solleu River in Theed, their bongo was swept away by the waterfall at the end of the river, but the three managed to escape to the shore.^[39]

Once in Theed, Jinn told his Padawan that he would create a diversion while Kenobi found a way into the Theed Royal Palace, and cautioned his Padawan to avoid entanglements.^[32]

When they tried to gain entry to the secured city, the central bridge across the river was blasted apart by an Armored Assault Tank, cutting the city off from other regions and causing Kenobi toe become separated from his Master and Binks.^[35]

During the battle, Kenobi rejoined Jinn.^[40] infiltrated Theed and fought through a city littered with more than twenty battle droids and OOM security battle droids to make it to the Royal Palace. They passed the Theed Royal Library, which had been turned into a war room for the Droid Army. Just past the library, they faced a guantlet of missile launcher-armed droids on the balcony and six destroyer droids on the road. At one point, the Jedi commandeered an Armored Assault Tank after taking out its three pilot droids and used it to travel through Theed, blasting other tanks and droids. They also rescued seven handmaidens who had been captured.^[41] They disembarked from the tank near the Palace grounds. As they moved onto the palace grounds, they faced more battle droids. In front of the palace they destroyed a T4 turret droid along with Flame battle droids. Kenobi then separated from Jinn again.^[37]

Kenobi was able to infiltrate the Palace but found that the Queen had been taken prisoner by the Trade Federation and was being taken to Camp Four. Kenobi informed his Master of the situation, and Jinn ordered his Padawan to meet back up. When Kenobi fought his way back through Theed, he found Jinn engaging two assassin droids, and together Master and apprentice destroyed the droids.^[42]

The two Jedi entered the Royal Palace and fought through more droids, including B1 grapple droids, destroyer droids, and OOM command battle droids. At one point they Force jumped on the outside of the walls, using the balconies to proceed to the next story. After that, they infiltrated the throne room with the help of one of the handmaidens they had rescued, who showed them a secret entrance.^[43]

Out in the streets, Theed's officials were liberated by the two Jedi and Binks as OOM security battle droids attempted to bring them to Camp Four. Bibble and several handmaidens decided to stay while the Queen went to Coruscant to plead for help in the Galactic Senate.^[4]

On their way to enter the passage under the Palace, Kenobi and the Queen were separated from Jinn, Panaka and the others. By the time the two groups met back up, they were near the Theed Hangar.^[35]

At the time, the Hangar was occupied by droids. Jinn approached an OOM command battle droid and tried to talk his way past it. When the droid ordered their arrest, Jinn pulled his lightsaber and disabled it, then turned on other droids, including 3B3-1204; meanwhile Kenobi rescued several Naboo pilots who were under guard. In the ensuing firefight, one of the Palace Guards was killed. With the droid threat gone, the Queen, Panaka, her handmaidens, and the two Jedi were able to flee aboard the Royal Naboo Starship and depart from Naboo. Governor Bibble stayed behind to watch over the people of Naboo. Ric Olié piloted the Royal Starship ship out of the atmosphere before facing the Federation blockade. One of the blockade battleships fired on the Royal Starship, disabling its shields. Astromech droids were sent to repair the damage, but several were destroyed before R2-D2 fixed the shields as the starship flew past the blockade and entered hyperspace. With the hyperdrive motivator damaged, Jinn convinced the Queen to divert to Tatooine for repairs.^[4]

Discovery of the Chosen OneEdit

On Tatooine, Jinn looked for parts in the settlement of Mos Espa, where he encountered the junk dealer Watto and his slave, a Force-sensitive young boy named Anakin Skywalker. Jinn came to believe that Skywalker may be the Chosen One of Jedi legend.^[4]

Jinn, agreeing to help Skywalker who was secretly building a podracer, acquired necessary machine parts—a mass coupler and a servo control system for the racing vehicle. Never forgetting his Jedi duties while in Mos Espa, Jinn was able to free a young Ithorian named Tomo from bondage of one Captain Neg and even dissuaded the assassin Jym Lang from committing a murder.^[35]

In order to bet on Skywalker during the Boonta Eve Classic podrace, Jinn agreed to meet Jabba the Hutt, the criminal leader of Tatooine, in order to borrow money from the gangster after encountering a Twi'lek slave named Ann Gella, who came to Jinn with the offer. He met Gella outside of the Boonta Eve stadium, and used a mind trick to get her to take him to Jabba immediately when she insisted on waiting until the podrace began. She gave him directions, which led to a spike-pit arena under Jabba's private box. Jabba offered Jinn 50 peggats if he could defeat his monstrous champion in a death match. Jinn was able to achieve victory over the beast, and took the peggats. He then left the arena after Jabba, impressed by his skill and cunning, opened the exit. Jinn found himself in the 7-Gee Lounge and asked the podracer Teemto Pagalies where to find Watto. Pagalies took him to meet Watto's flunky. Jinn had to buy the man and his friend a Juri juice to persuade the drunken flunky to take him to Watto. Jinn was able to convince Watto to take his bet that Skywalker would win the race.^[35]

Jinn then headed down to the Mos Espa Grand Arena and met with Skywalker. When he arrived there, someone had stolen the ignition capacitor from Skywalker's pod. Jinn pursued the thief around the bottom of the arena and cornered him in one of the arena's domes. Jinn then moved a loose block in the room, which took him to another room where he encountered a scavenger, who refused to return the capacitor and attacked Jinn. Mechanized blasters appeared and fired at Jinn during the firefight. Jinn was forced to kill the scavenger and destroy the guns; he then brought the capacitor back to Skywalker.^[35]

Later, Jinn was able to release Skywalker from slavery as well, when he bet Watto on the boy's victory at the Boonta Eve Classic podrace. The wager also resulted in obtaining parts to fix the damaged Naboo ship. Jinn delivered the parts to the Queen's ship, then returned to Mos Espa to free Skywalker.^[4] On his way, he was lured into an ambush when a Rodian pointed him in the direction of kidnappers. Jinn was attacked by four thugs, who had been hired by Watto. Jinn defeated them, and then used a mind trick to force the Rodian to tell him who had hired them. Jinn then returned to Watto, and demanded that he disable Skywalker's tracking device. Outside of Watto's shop, Jinn sold Skywalker's podracer to Sebulba, then went to find Anakin. At the time, the young podracer was fighting Greedo, who had accused Skywalker of cheating. Jinn broke up the fight, and led Skywalker away; he then handed Skywalker the money he had acquired by selling the pod.^[44]

Jinn and Skywalker returned to the Skywalker's home, where the Jedi revealed that the young boy had been freed from slavery—but his mother had not been. Shmi told Skywalker to follow his destiny, and the boy agreed to go with Jinn and train as a Jedi.^[4]

With their means to return to Coruscant secured, Jinn and his new charge sojourned to the outskirts of Mos Espa to meet up with their companions.^[4] However, their progress was watched by a DRK-1 Dark Eye probe droid. Jinn sensed the intrusive presence and struck the probe down, yet the damage was already done.^[45]

Moving past Mos Eisley, Jinn^[46] and Skywalker were attacked by a group of Tusken Raiders, but Jinn was able to prevent Skywalker from coming to harm. Moving past the Tuskens, they came across a Jawa camp. A Jawa stole the T-14 hyperdrive generator that Skywalker was carrying, then ran off into a cave. Skywalker purused the Jawa. Jinn continued down the canyon as a Tusken started chasing Skywalker and the Jawa. Jinn was also intermittently attacked by more probe droids. Jinn went up the canyon slope and avoided a rock slide started by the Tuskens. Jinn also traversed around the Sarlacc and ascended up the canyon wall by jumping up the cliff edges. He then ended up in an Armored Krakkiss' lair and was forced to duel the beast, eventually forcing it to withdraw. A short way off from the lair was a Tusken Raider camp, where Jinn located the hyperdrive. Jinn collected the hyperdrive and met back up with Skywalker.^[37]

The Sith Lord Darth Maul had been trailing the Jedi and recovered his destroyed droid, thinking that his quarry had stowed aboard the smuggling ship Dusty Duck. Maul boarded the light freighter and struck down the pilot, Aneesa Dym, believing her to be harboring his enemy.^[47] Once he learned the truth, the Sith assassin doubled his efforts to reach Jinn before he escaped. As Jinn and Skywalker approached the Queen's ship, they were intercepted by Darth Maul who nearly knocked down Skywalker with his speeder. Jinn fought the Sith warrior in a vicious lightsaber duel as the ship took off behind him. Jumping high with the Force, the Jedi Master managed to land on the boarding ramp as the ship soared away, leaving the Sith Lord behind on the desert planet.^[4]

On Coruscant, Jinn and Kenobi appeared before the Jedi High Council to give a report. The Council reluctantly agreed to test young Skywalker for Jedi potential.^[4] During their stay on Coruscant, Jinn watched over a duel between his apprentice and Master Windu.^[32] When the Council tested young Skywalker, the Masters found that the boy was indeed very strong with the Force, having the greatest potential ever recorded, but declined to train him on the grounds that he was too old. Yoda sensed that the boy's future was "clouded". Jinn tried to release Kenobi from apprenticeship, saying that Kenobi was ready for the Jedi Trials, in order to take Skywalker as his Padawan. But the Council would not be swayed. Disappointed, Jinn and Kenobi prepared to return to Naboo on orders of the Council, with Queen Amidala, who hoped to liberate the planet in one swift stroke.^[4]

Return to NabooEdit

Queen Amidala convinced Jar Jar Binks to take them to the Gungans to form an alliance. Upon their return to Naboo, they landed in the swamps. Binks searched Otoh Gunga but the city had been abandoned, so he led the Jedi, the Queen, and her entourage to the Gungan sacred place. Amidala asked for Boss Nass' permission to journey to the Sacred Place. Boss Nass obliged them, and the Naboo group went through the swamps on foot. They battled many Trade Federation troops, who were sometimes already fighting members of the Resistance who had retreated into the swamps. At one point they were joined by two Naboo light scout frigates and an aquatic transport, which they used to sink a Federation Ocean Troop Transport and to travel up the swamp.^[26]

Along the way, the two Jedi^[48] fought through a large force of battle droids in a dry riverbed, including one OOM-series command droid. The two Jedi also disrupted a command center. Moving past it, they engaged 3 Plasma battle droids and more battle droids.^[37]

After that, they encountered five more Plasma battle droids guarding a bridge, along with more battle droids, some carrying missile launchers. Past the bridge, the Jedi Force Jumped through a set of ruins and avoided being eaten by carnivorous plants and the kreetles. After the ruins, they passed into the swamps and faced seven more battle droids and more carnivorous plants. They also avoided a Gungan pit trap full of kreetles.^[37]

Near the sacred place, they were challenged by thirteen Gungan warriors; the two Jedi drove them off with non-lethal force. They then met the Gungan Security Chief. The Chief was bested in a short duel with the Jedi. During the duel, he leapt onto a statue several times to throw boomas or call in reinforcements—other Gungan warriors and kaadu. Thinking the Jedi had been worn down by his warriors, the Chief engaged the two Jedi again with his electropole, although he was defeated. Impressed, he let the Naboo proceed to see Boss Nass.^[37]

They soon arrived at the Sacred Place, where Amidala revealed herself to Nass as the Queen of Naboo and begged for her help. Nass agreed to join with her to free Naboo. Nass, Amidala, and Jinn then formed a plan to capture Viceroy Nute Gunray.^[4]

Deadly duelEdit

During the final stages of the invasion, Jinn and Kenobi started out aiding Amidala and her sortie after they infiltrated the city.^[4]

The Jedi^[49] were walking along the deserted streets of Theed when they were attacked by an overzealous battle droid on a Single Trooper Aerial Platform. They reflected its laser bolts back at it, destroying the droid and causing the Platform to crash, intact. The two Jedi decided to ride it and another one they found through the streets of Theed, destroying numerous battle droids and destroyer droids before diverting onto an aquaduct and facing more battle droids. They had to destroy several gates blocking their path. The two Jedi eventually dismounted at the cliffs overlooking the waterfall.^[37]

They then proceeded to Force Jump down the cliffs until reaching a balcony, then jumping back up the other side. At the top, six Naboo pilots were being held in separate rooms, guarded by three droids each. Each droid trio was a separate type of droid—OOM security battle droids, B1 grapple droids, Flame battle droids, Grapple droidekas, destroyer droids, and B1 battle droids armed with missile launchers. The Jedi rescued five of the pilots before proceeding.^[37]

Jinn and Kenobi then rejoined the Queen's strikeforce outside of the Theed Hangar. Kenobi led the team inside, where they faced resistance from battle droids, which were quickly eliminated,^[35] but not before the droids alerted the Federation's Command Officer.^[50]

The strike force was discovered, and with battle droid reinforcements on the way, Kenobi was asked to assist the resistance in securing the hangar by destroying the six power cells powering the doors. A Resistance soldier individually lowered the shields on the power cells, and Kenobi sliced through each one when its shield was down. The others provided covering fire, and in Jinn's case, lightsaber cover while Kenobi was disabling the power cells. They faced two E4 baron droids, regular battle droids, and Bomb droids, along with droid starfighters in walker mode which rose up from below the hangar.^[32]

During the engagement, the Naboo pilots were able to to take off to attack the Droid Control Ship, although one was shot down by an AAT stationed outside of the hangar. Panaka ordered Red and Blue Gropus to regroup, and the strike force moved toward the Palace. Then the doors opened, revealing the mysterious warrior wielding his double-bladed lightsaber Jinn had engaged on Tatooine. The two Jedi moved to attack him. After Darth Maul appeared, the Queen and her men split up, but they were then pinned down by a squad of destroyer droids. Anakin Skywalker, taking refuge in a N-1 starfighter, accidentally took off, destroyed the droids with the craft's far stronger laser cannon blasts, and joined the battle in space guided by the fighter's auto-pilot. The Jedi and Sith engaged in a duel that waged on into the Theed Generator Complex while Amidala, Panaka, and their security forces left the hangar through a separate door.^[4]

While the Queen and her guards went to reclaim the throne room, the two Jedi engaged the Sith Lord. The lightsaber duel was frenzied and brutal, moving through the hangar and into the Theed Generator Complex, where they fought on the precarious catwalks.^[4] When Maul kicked Kenobi over the edge of the catwalk they were fighting on, Jinn was forced to continue the duel alone.^[35] While his Padawan rushed to catch up, Jinn and Maul moved on, passing through an impenetrable laser shield security system to one of the cooling pits. The shields closed between them, separating the combatants momentarily, but also separated Kenobi from Jinn, over ten shields apart. Jinn took advantage of the break in the duel to crouch down and meditate, bringing himself in full tune with the Force. When the shields deactivated, Jinn immediately attacked Maul while Kenobi rushed to help his Master.^[4]

However, the shields closed again, preventing Kenobi from aiding his mentor. Although Jinn was one of the best lightsaber duelists in the Order, his preferred practice of Form IV proved disadvantageous in the confined space of the cooling pit, as Ataru required a wide, open space for its energetic acrobatics and multi-angular bladework. Also, Maul had the advantage of youth and pure strength.^[4]

The end result was Jinn being hit in the chin with Maul's saberstaff hilt, leaving him momentarily stunned, and the Sith mercilessly impaled him through the stomach. As the Jedi Master crumpled to the floor, Maul turned his attention to Kenobi^[4] and taunted the apprentice, saying that he had found his Master somewhat disappointing.^[32]

Kenobi rushed to face Maul as soon as the shields opened, and as he continued to duel Maul, Kenobi succeeded in slicing the Sith Lord's double-bladed lightsaber hilt in half, but was then knocked into the pit. Though Kenobi managed to hold onto the edge of the pit, he lost his lightsaber, leaving him defenseless. Ultimately, Kenobi defeated Maul when he leaped out of the pit, called his Master's lightsaber to his hand, and seemingly struck the Sith down.^[51] With his last breaths, Jinn told Kenobi to train Skywalker, knowing that the boy ultimately would fulfill the prophecy and bring balance to the Force. Jinn was later cremated in the Theed Funeral Temple.^[4]

LegacyEdit

After falling at the hands of Darth Maul on Naboo, Qui-Gon Jinn continued to have a large impact on the future of the Jedi. Jinn's death also is known to have troubled his former master so much that Dooku, who had touched the dark side even as a young boy, became even more disillusioned with the Jedi Order. This led him to further rationalize the philosophy of the dark side, contributing to his eventual fall. He left the Jedi Order^[52] and became Darth Tyranus, replacing Maul as Darth Sidious's Sith apprentice.^[53]

Having long ago discovered a way to maintain his identity after death from a Shaman of the Whills, Qui-Gon attempted unsuccessfully to prevent Skywalker's slaughter of the Sand people that had killed his mother.^[53] He was also known to have often communicated with Yoda through the Force in a subtle way until finally revealing himself in 19 BBY.^[54]

Jinn later contacted Anakin Skywalker during the Battle of Praesitlyn to prevent him from murdering surrendered Separatist Admiral Pors Tonith.^[55] At roughly the same time, he also appeared in a Force vision to Yoda, as him, sending Skywalker into a tree, implying that it was time for Skywalker to face his Trials and be Knighted. When Skywalker was summoned back to the Temple to what he thought was another "scolding," he angrily told Kenobi that, as a teacher, he was "no Qui-Gon Jinn," a comment which surprised and saddened the Jedi Master. Skywalker immediately regretted the outburst and tried to apologize, but Kenobi assured him that he also missed his former master.^[56]

During the Clone Wars, Qui-Gon Jinn appeared to Obi-Wan Kenobi during his visit on Mortis. He told him about a Force-sensitive family who, like him, believed Anakin to be the Chosen One. He warns Kenobi if Skywalker can't find balance within his soul, he'll be in great danger on this planet^[57] Later on, on the same planet, he appeared before Anakin Skywalker who was going to confront the Son. Jinn guided him towards the Well of the Dark Side where the Son lay before disappearing.^[58]

Shortly after the reorganization of the Republic into the Galactic Empire, Yoda finally heard Jinn's voice clearly and proclaimed himself Jinn's pupil in order to master the skill the deceased Jedi had learned. It was achieved through extreme compassion, a rejection of selfishness and personal attachment to the point that the physical self fades away, but the consciousness remains as one with the Force.^[9]

Yoda learned the technique, and passed this secret on to Obi-Wan Kenobi,^[59] who would also train under Qui-Gon Jinn, giving him the ability to aid Skywalker's son Luke Skywalker where it would otherwise have been impossible. Thus even in death, Qui-Gon's rebellious nature served the greater good.^[source?]

A short time following the end of the Clone Wars, Jinn spoke to his former apprentice Kenobi, in the streets of Anchorhead, for the first time since his death on Naboo.^[60] When Kenobi was debating whether to go to Bellassa to rescue Ferus Olin, Jinn promised to watch over Anakin Skywalker's son, Luke.^[61]

The Jedi Archives had a Bronzium sculpture of Qui-Gon Jinn on the first floor.^[2] Also, the Planetarium in the Jedi Temple's Tower of First Knowledge had a large memorial statue of the late Jedi Master.^[62]

Personality and traitsEdit

Regarded as a maverick by his peers, Qui-Gon Jinn was a wise and faithful—but unorthodox—member of the Jedi Order. He was also a powerful warrior.^[63] Jinn was a proponent of the Living Force concept, and his many attempts to help lesser creatures annoyed his master, Dooku, to no end. Dooku, Jinn, Kenobi, and Skywalker formed a chain of Jedi Masters and Padawans through which passed a rebellious streak, making them a difficulty in the eyes of the Jedi Council. Indeed, his Padawan Kenobi suggested that the Council would have invited Jinn to join them, if he would follow the Jedi Code. A distinguished and adept Jedi warrior, Qui-Gon Jinn reflected strength and wisdom.

Qui-Gon came into knighthood during an era in which the Jedi Order was more conservative and committed to a democratic Republic. His commitment to studying the galaxy and interacting with it would prove far-reaching, having a great impact on Kenobi and his Padawan Anakin Skywalker, both of whom would greatly influence the founder of the New Jedi Order, Luke Skywalker.

Qui-Gon was also known for his often-overwhelming compassion for all life forms. This commiseration led to his saving Jar Jar Binks from his punishment at the hands of his fellow Gungans, and contributed greatly to his freeing of Skywalker.

Controversially, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn was thought of as a Gray Jedi by some members of the Order for his frequent opposition to their demands. While the term was used to refer to Force-users who walked the line between light and dark, Jedi were also labeled as Gray Jedi for distancing themselves from the Jedi High Council. This practice dated back to the days of the Old Republic, when the High Council was attempting to consolidate power. Jedi who frequently clashed with the will of the Council were sometimes thought of as Gray even if they did not necessarily walk the line between the light and dark sides of the Force.

Yet he was a great teacher and mentor, and taught Kenobi the Nelvaanian tongue on their journeys across the galaxy, as well as others.

The Jedi Master appeared much younger than his age and had a penetrating gaze. He also had a subtle attention to detail, seen as he could sense mood changes in the people around him and was quite adept at hiding his emotions from other individuals, even other Jedi. His master was often perplexed by his ability to do this even when Qui-Gon was a Padawan.

Powers and abilitiesEdit

A philosophical warrior, Qui-Gon Jinn believed heavily in what he referred to as the "Living Force," a method of focusing on the moment rather than contemplating the Force in all its degrees. It has been suggested that an ability such as this would have been conducive to stopping Palpatine's rise to power; as the Jedi focused on the Separatist threat to the future of the Galactic Republic, they failed to examine the moment more closely.^[source?] Qui-Gon was also skilled in mind tricks, as was evident when he managed to convince the Gungan leader to let him escape. Jinn was also able to foresee that his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, would become a great Jedi, despite his preference to focus on the present rather than the future.^[4]

In addition to his Force powers, Qui-Gon Jinn was one of the finest swordsman in the Jedi Order, having frequent sparring experience with many of his equally skilled contemporaries; notably Mace Windu. Indeed it was said that he was the only Jedi apart from his own Master, Dooku and Grand Master Yoda, who was able to fight Windu as an equal. Jinn was a master of the fourth form of lightsaber combat, Ataru. In combat, his bladework was wide and powerful, marked by heavy, two-handed slashes, and sudden flourishes to cover his flanks. Jinn's mastery of Ataru allowed him to easily defeat blaster wielding opponents despite the forms weakness to blaster fire.^[4] Rather than focus on an overall strategy, Jinn prefered to adjust his technique based on the needs of the moment.^[64]

However, Jinn was not without his weaknesses. In his elder years, his strength and physical ability began to diminish from age, his primary edge becoming experience and intuition rather than raw strength.^[10] Despite his mastery of Ataru, Jinn was still prey to some of the form's flaws, namely the weak defense and the lack of effectiveness in confined spaces.^[65][66] All these weaknesses came into play during his final duel against Darth Maul. Driving Maul onto the narrow ledge above a melting pit in the Naboo power core, Jinn hoped to use the confined space to prevent Maul from bringing his saberstaff to bear, engaging the Sith Lord in close-quarters combat. However, this tactic backfired, the closed-in space hampering Jinn's technique rather than Maul's, allowing the Sith Lord to force him onto the defensive. Closed in, forced onto the defensive, and heavily fatigued from the long duel leading up to this, Jinn was brought down.^[10]

Qui-Gon had a vast knowledge of the architecture of many capital ships and large transports, and understood their abilities and vulnerable points, including the engineering and structure of the Trade Federation's landing craft. Because of this knowledge, both Jinn and Kenobi were able to sneak onto separate ships and stow away until they reached the swamps of Naboo.^[32]

His linguistic capabilities were also notable. He was fluent in many languages, including Basic, Nelvaanese, Cerean, Gran and Shyriiwook.^[67]

PortrayalEdit

Qui-Gon Jinn was portrayed by Liam Neeson in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. As revealed in The Art of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Lucas conceived Jinn's character during pre-production of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. This is shown by concept art where Kenobi is shown alone in the Federation ship and while meeting Binks. Even when Jinn was conceived, Lucas toyed with making him the younger Jedi, as shown in concept art depicting Kenobi as an old man.

Neeson's voice was later used briefly in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. The character was voiced by Fred Tatasciore for the Star Wars: Clone Wars animated series. James Warwick voiced Qui-Gon Jinn in the 1999 video game adaptation of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantome Menace, the 2000 video game Star Wars: Episode I Jedi Power Battles, the 2001 video game Star Wars: Obi-Wan and the 2001 video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds.

Jinn's voice was set to appear in Revenge of the Sith, and Neeson had hinted at involvement in early 2005.^[68] The scene was cut, however, and Neeson was never recorded.^[69] The scene between Yoda and Jinn can still be read in the film's screenplay and the novelization. Jinn was also mentioned in the video game platform and Gameboy Advance/Nintendo DS versions of the Revenge of the Sith game.

Neeson reprised his role again in 2011, voicing a ghostly Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.^[70]

ContinuityEdit

Jinn was a playable character during the Tatooine portions (Mos Espa, Mos Espa Arena and Desert Encounter) of the Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace video game, which contradicts the movie somewhat. He also appears in other missions supporting the player. The game outright contradicts the movie scene during the mission, Otoh Gunga. Binks was arrested and separated from the Jedi, and Jinn orders Kenobi to travel through the city and rescue him. Kenobi travels through the city, Force pushing guards out of his way and using a mind trick to secure the release of Binks. They then meet up with Jinn in the bongo transport bay. In the movie, Binks stands with them the whole scene. This article assumes the scenario to be non-canon.

Star Wars: Episode I Jedi Power Battles, which can be played with one or two players, featured Jinn as one of five playable characters. If chosen, he beats Darth Maul outright and appears in the victory celebration after the invasion was over. This article assumes the last mission is non-canonical. The levels Trade Federation Battleship, Swamps of Naboo, City of Theed, and Theed Royal Palace take place from the start of the movie to the Jedi's departure on Theed. The first mission starts just after Jinn's and Kenobi's escape from the conference room onboard the Trade Federation flagship. They travel through the corridors and engage a large group of battle droids before finding a command center. They then travel on a conveyor to a hangar and duel a Cargo Loader Droid. They then continue through the ship and duel a droid starfighter. The next mission takes place in Naboo's swamps, after the Jedi meet Binks. They escort the Gungan through the swamps and face a large group of battle droids throughout the mission. The level ends after defeating the Slaatik hagworm. If they take too long during the mission, Binks may be killed, although he runs off to the side and is hardly seen. The next mission takes place after the Jedi's arrival in Theed. The Jedi travel through the streets to the Palace; along the way they rescue several Handmaidens from the droid. The mission requires the player to rescue seven of the handmaidens. During the mission the players take control of an Armored Assault Tank and use it to blast other tanks. They then dismount and destroy a T4 turret droid. The last mission in Theed contradicts the movie. The two Jedi infiltrate the Palace and fight through more battle droids. They then find a tomb, which opens to reveal one of the handmaidens they had rescued. She leads them to the Throne Room, where they rescue Queen Amidala from battle droids. They then escort her through the Palace to the Hangar, which is guarded by Plasma battle droids. This article assumes the second half of the mission is non-canon.

In the Coruscant mission, the player(s) travel to the Jedi Temple while fighting gang members. The next mission, Ruins, expands on the scene where the Queen and Jedi return to Theed. The player(s) fight through the swamps and some ruins before meeting the Gungan Security Chief. The next two missions feature a return to Theed: Streets of Theed puts the Jedi on captured Federation STAPs to travel to the Theed Royal Palace. In Palace Cliffs, the player(s) scale the Palace cliffs and face five rooms out of six full of various types of battle droids to rescue Security Force pilots. The third chronicles the duel with Darth Maul. The duel in the game contradicts the movie, so this article does not incorporate its events. The duel features extra posturing on Darth Maul's part, with him bowing twice to the player. They then duel, heading out of the hangar and into the power chamber. The player chases Maul around the catwalks and duels him on an energy bridge, before leaping down a set of rings and dueling Maul on the central catwalk. Maul Force-jumps away from the player, who chases the Sith Lord. In the next section, they face three battle droids and take an elevator up. On the upper catwalk, the player faces two more droids and must jump across a series of gaps which feature oscilating lasers. Once past, the player must disable two fans. They then disable a third fan and start jumping down its five levels, disabling more fans on the way down. The player ends up on the bottom of the power chamber and must avoid falling into the pool. Past that is a laser gate maze, which is guarded by more droids. The next section past the maze is a series of gaps which the player must jump over, while also avoiding the lasers. Once across, there is a short duel with Maul which is similar to the movie.

Jinn supports the player in Star Wars: Obi-Wan, who takes the role of the titular Jedi in each mission. In the mission Betrayal, Jinn and Kenobi escape from the Federation conference room and travel through the flagship until reaching the bridge. In that game they discover the invasion fleet before they do in the movie. Jinn's duel with Darth Maul at the start of the Darth Maul level is not-scripted, and the player can see a different duel each time.

The preceding three games contradict each other and the Episode I movie to some extent. They all feature the Jedi's arrival at Naboo up to rescuing the Queen or later. This article includes all three pathways and notes specific contradictions where applicable.

In Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, Jinn narrates the training campaign and appears throughout the game. The game requires Jinn to survive to complete the missions he appears in.

Qui-Gon Jinn also appeared as a mute LEGO figure in the 2007 compilation of the LEGO Star Wars video game in the game's first chapter, an outlandish reenactment of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

In the 2008 Star Wars: The Force Unleashed video game, if you enter MAVERICK as a cheat code, you can play as Qui-Gon Jinn.^[66] In the PSP duel mode of the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed video game, Qui-Gon Jinn fights the player along with Obi Wan.

There was some confusion as to how many apprentices Jinn had during the course of his career. All sources agree that he trained Xanatos and then Kenobi, but there is also the occasional reference to a Padawan before Xanatos. This discrepancy was solved in the Jinn's Databank entry, where it is stated that "Qui-Gon obsessed over his failure for years, dismissing his earlier successes as a teacher and often referring to Xanatos as his "first" apprentice".^[13] In 2011, Jinn's first Padawan was identified as Feemor in the Star Wars: Jedi—The Dark Side comic series.

There is a rumor circulated among Star Wars fans claiming that a piece of fabric seen draped across some furniture in Obi-Wan Kenobi's hut in A New Hope is actually the gray poncho worn by Qui-Gon Jinn during his visit to Tatooine in The Phantom Menace. Whether the costume designers of Episode I intentionally fashioned Jinn's poncho to resemble this obscure piece of cloth is highly dubious and remains unconfirmed.
