[edit] History
At some point in time, R3-S6 was stolen by agents of General Grievous. It was taken to Milagro, reprogrammed and surreptitiously returned to the Republic to act as a spy. After the loss of R2-D2 during the Battle of Bothawui, Goldie was assigned as a temporary replacement to Anakin Skywalker during the search for Artoo. R3 joined Skywalker and his Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, on the Twilight, leaving the Resolute to search the battlefield for the lost droid, as he contained secret Republic strategies and information and would be dangerous in the hands of the Separatists. The group spotted a scavenging ship combing the battlefield for remains, and the group boarded the ship. Anakin inquired if Gha Nachkt had picked up an R2 unit recently, of which he replied that he had not, but that they could check his supplies to see if he had. R3 "accidentally" turned on the lights and activated two IG-86 sentinel droids while trying to open a door. After the two Jedi dispatched the droids, Anakin commented on R3's defectiveness, after which the droid opened the door. After stumbling across Nackht again, the two Jedi left with R3 and returned to the Resolute.[2]
R3 accompanied Anakin as the copilot of his fighter to scout ahead for a Separatist listening post. However, shortly after arriving out of hyperspace, R3 "accidentally" activated the fighter's homing beacon. General Grievous, alerted to their presence, arrived with two Munificent-class frigates and dispatched Vulture droids to attack the Jedi. In the ensuing fight, R3 "accidentally" dropped the hyperdrive engines, and they were destroyed. After R3 encountered further problems with the engines, Ahsoka and Captain Rex arrived aboard the Twilight to rescue the two. Anakin, already hurt about the loss of Artoo, took out his anger on R3, while Ahsoka defended the droid.[2]
Soon after, Artoo managed to send a message to the group. Tracking the transmission to the Ruusan moon, the group discovered Skytop Station, the listening post they had been looking for, and proceeded to destroy it. Rex carried R3 during the landing on the station, something which he stated he would never repeat. Anakin, still set on finding Artoo, left Ahsoka and the clones to destroy the station. However, R3 revealed his true allegiances, alerting Grievous of the mission, and was ordered to keep the Jedi there. After stalling by taking his time opening a blast door, droids arrived and attacked the squad. Shortly after the clones defeated the droids, Grievous appeared, killing all the clones except Rex and Denal. Ahsoka engaged Grievous to allow the two to complete the mission, and R3 accompanied her as she led Grievous away.[3]
However, as the two entered a storage room, R3 gave away Ahsoka's location, and Grievous attacked her. During a stint in the duel, R3 received a transmission from Anakin that they had found Artoo and were rendezvousing in the south landing bay, and Grievous ordered the droid to stop the Jedi from escaping. Ahsoka, overhearing this, finally learned of the droid's treachery. R3 met Skywalker and the clones in the landing bay. Anakin learned that Ahsoka had engaged Grievous alone, and quickly went to rescue her. However, R3 locked the Jedi and the clones in the hangar, and also activated three Vulture droids. B2 super battle droids appeared, and the Republic forces engaged in battle. Anakin sent Artoo to look for controls on the outer platform and open the hangar. After Artoo found the controls, R3 followed him and engaged the droid in a duel. Both shocked each other simultaneously, but Artoo managed to incapacitate his opponent. After Artoo opened the hangar door, R3 regained control and attacked Artoo again. However, this time, Artoo spurted oil at R3 and knocked him toward the edge of the platform. R3 deployed a cable and hung on to Artoo to prevent himself from falling, but Artoo lit the oil on fire with his boosters and cut through the cable with his saw. As R3 flew through the air, he was smashed to pieces by flying debris.[4] Shortly after, Artoo was rescued by Anakin in his fighter.[3]
[edit] Personality and traits
Because he was a spy, R3 was very devious and deceitful. He masked his true missions with fake innocence, relying on appeared incompetence to attempt to kill Anakin and Ahsoka on various occasions before revealing his true allegiances to them.[2][3]
[edit] Behind the scenes
The coloring of R3-S6 was based upon the team colors of Dave Filoni's favorite football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.[5]
