R7-D4 was an Astromech droid that helped aboard Jedi Master Plo Koon's Delta-7B starfighter, Blade of Dorin. He had brown markings and was a veteran of numerous battles. Plo Koon refused to give him a memory wipe, being unwilling to lose the droid's personality.
History
R7-D4 was Jedi Master Plo Koon's copilot for Blade of Dorin, his Delta-7B Aethersprite-class light interceptor during the Battle of the Kaliida Nebula. Before the battle, Plo Koon accompanied Anakin Skywalker, his Padawan Ahsoka Tano and Shadow Squadron through the Balmorra Run, in which they encountered Neebray mantas. Arriving near the Kaliida Shoals Medical Center, the squadron engaged the Malevolence, and were able to damage its ion cannons, and when they were used, they exploded and further damaged the Separatist warship.
Behind the scenes
Plo Koon's astromech droid was originally named "R7-F5" in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars: The Visual Guide publication, but this was revised to "R7-D4" in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars Character Encyclopedia. The "R7-F5" designation was later given to another droid in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Comic UK 6.23.
If R7-D4 is indeed an R7-series astromech droid, and not just an earlier model with an "R7" designation, his inclusion poses a continuity problem, as R7 units were not been created until the late stages of the Galactic Civil War.
However, Pablo Hidalgo's revelation that droid names are fragments of longer designations could also provide an explanation for this apparent lack of continuity.[2]
