First Order Rank Insignia
FOSB Aurebesh

First Order Security Bureau rank insignia of Agent Tierny

The Rank insignia of the First Order was used in the First Order military.

Army and Navy insignia[]

The military rank of officers of the First Order Navy, and of the First Order Army when not in combat situations, was denoted by a combination of uniform color and arm insignia. Standard officers wore charcoal gray uniforms, senior officers, including Commanders,[1] wore teal, junior officers wore light gray, and non-commissioned officers wore black.[2]

Rank was further denoted by insignia worn on the left sleeve of the uniform. Insignia consisted of a black cuff title edged in silver, typically bearing the name of a particular Imperial hero or unit of the Galactic Civil War depicted in silver Aurebesh letters, with two of them also carrying a form of alternate Aurebesh numbers.[2] Insignia for Generals and Admirals was somewhat different and consisted of two blank black stripes, both edged in silver. Generals' stripes were further accentuated with black piping, while Admirals' stripes had red piping.[2]

Uniform color Name on cuff title Rank
Teal Kaplan Colonel
Teal Tarkin Major
Light gray Dillon Captain
Light gray Power Lieutenant
Black Ro 8 Sergeant
Black Hal 4 Squad leader
Black FOSB Member of First Order Security Bureau

Stormtrooper insignia[]

While in armor, the rank of a stormtrooper was indicated by the color of their pauldron: red was for officers, black for sergeants, and white for squad leaders.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

The First Order's use of braided armbands as rank insignia is visually similar to the cuff titles used by Nazi Germany for unit identification.

The name Dillon is most likely a reference to costume designer Glyn Dillon, who worked on Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens,[4] which the reference book Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary, where all the armbands first appear together, is based on.[2] Similarly, the names Ro and Hal seem to be a reference to Dillon's sons, who are named Ro and Hal.[5]
