[edit] Biography
Tarkin long harbored a wish to become the leader of the Galactic Republic. The head of the Galactic Senate's Militarist faction, Ranulph Tarkin advocated the re-establishment of a standing Republic military. When Iaco Stark was determined to be behind the bacta shortage, Tarkin opposed the Jedi-suggested diplomatic meeting at Troiken. He gained the location of the meeting from a Trade Federation representative, and using his family's wealth and influence, assembled a warfleet of Judicial Forces ships with the intention of destroying Stark's forces.
However, his fleet's computers had been infected by a computer navigation virus by Stark. Tarkin, like the majority of his soldiers, was killed at the ensuing Stark Hyperspace War.
His seat in the Galactic Senate was assumed by his relative, Shayla Paige-Tarkin. In 40 BBY, his family agreed to back Finis Valorum's bid for Supreme Chancellor in the Chancery election on the condition that Ranulph be posthumously honored.
[edit] Behind the scenes
Author John Ostrander originally envisioned Ranulph as the uncle of Wilhuff Tarkin.[source?] However, The New Essential Chronology established them as cousins.
