The ray was a non-sentient, predatory scalefish native to the oceans of the Mid Rim planet Naboo and, after being introduced there, Naboo's moon, Ohma-D'un. Rays teemed around the underwater city of Otoh Gunga, home to the Gungan species. Blue in color, rays were considered fast swimmers and impressive leapers due to a pronounced crescent-shaped caudal fin located at the back of their bodies.

DescriptionEdit

The ray was a non-sentient, long-bodied scalefish that possessed sharp teeth, large wispy frontal fins, and stubby tail fins, as well as a large crescent-shaped caudal fin. Rays were considered to be good swimmers, thanks to the powerful caudal fin. The large head and wide mouth dominated much of the body and were able to distend to hold the carnivorous fish's prey. They were visually colorful, with blue scales, a white belly, and red-and-yellow eyes.[1]

Rays were native to the Mid Rim planet Naboo,[1][2] and were also introduced to its moon, Ohma-D'un, as part of a Gungan colonization effort after the Invasion of Naboo,[3] which occurred in 32 BBY.[4] On Naboo, these fish were found in the Naboo Abyss. They were especially abundant around the underwater Gungan city of Otoh Gunga, but they favored open waters and surface oceans.[1] Though they were attracted by the lights of Otoh Gunga, they knew by experience not to swim through the gelatinous substance that led to the air-filled chambers.[5] Both the Gungans and Humans, known as the Naboo on the Mid Rim world, considered the ray an excellent sportfish, as it put up a strong fight and often made spectacular leaps from the water.[6]

The ray was one of the many prey of the opee sea killer, a larger sea creature native to the depths of Naboo. Several rays could be snatched by the tongue of the opee as it hunted.[1]

HistoryEdit

Rays evolved on the planet Naboo up to at least 32 BBY, where they were present as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn; his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi; and the Gungan Jar Jar Binks swam down to the city of Otoh Gunga to speak with Gungan representatives.[2] After the events of the Invasion of Naboo, the fish was introduced to Naboo's moon, the Gungan colony of Ohma-D'un.[3]

Behind the scenesEdit

The ray first appeared in the 1999 prequel trilogy film Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, along with several other creatures in the deep oceans of Naboo, including other scalefish with names such as doo, mee, faa, see, laa, and tee. Subsequent appearances of the fish include Episode I-related materials and reference guides, including The Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide, which expanded known fauna with its chapter on Naboo. The ray also appears in Naboo content in the video game Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided and the game Star Wars Episode I: The Gungan Frontier. In the latter, though not one of the animals a player can choose to take to Ohma-D'un in the Mantaris transport, rays can nonetheless be seen swimming in the oceans of the moon in the game's city-view setting.
