The Rebel Dream was an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer[1] of the New Republic Navy. It began its career in the Imperial Navy as the Tyrant.

History

Imperial service

Assigned to Darth Vader's Death Squadron, it was commanded by the capable Captain Xamuel Lennox, with Lieutenant Cabbel serving as executive officer.[10][11]

In 1 BBY, the Tyrant was one of the ten Imperial Star Destroyers involved in the Battle of Turkana.[5]

Eight months after the Battle of Yavin, the ship fought Warlord Nuso Esva's forces in the Poln system as part of Death Squadron.[6]

During the Battle of Hoth, Tyrant attempted to intercept the first Rebel transports to flee from Hoth, but was disabled by several shots from the Rebel's planetary ion cannon. Lennox's warship was left to float through the system and several more Rebel transports subsequently escaped.[2]

During the battle on the surface, Imperial troops captured Rebel General Crix Madine and sent him to the Tyrant. After the shuttle entered the Tyrant's docking bay, the Tyrant was hit by another blast from the planetary ion cannon. While overseeing the repair of systems disabled by the ion cannon, Rebel commandos boarded the ship and rescued Madine. The commandos escaped with General Madine on a Lambda-class shuttle, with the Tyrant unable to pursue the shuttle. Later, the shuttle brought General Madine to the Mon Calamari Cruiser Champion, which then prepared to jump to hyperspace. Lennox engaged the cruiser with the now functional Tyrant, and proceeded to launch TIE fighters in preparation for battle. Lennox hailed the Champion and said that if they handed over General Madine that he would call off his attack. The captain of the Champion refused and ordered the launch of his ship's fighters. Captain Lennox was unable to defeat the Champion and the ship escaped with Madine.[13][14]

In 4 ABY, Captain Lennox and the Tyrant participated in the Battle of Endor.[7]

New Republic service

Later, in the aftermath of the Bacta War, the New Republic captured the Tyrant from a weakly defended Imperial fueling outpost. Impressed by the symbolism of the Star Destroyer's former history serving with Vader's Death Squadron, Councilor Leia Organa renamed the ship the Rebel Dream and selected it as her personal flagship.[8][15]

By 7 ABY, the Rebel Dream was serving as Minister of State Leia Organa Solo's consular ship[3], but was back in active duty to fight the Imperial Star Destroyer Peremptory at the Battle of Storinal. It was in this battle that Rebel Dream was recaptured by Imperial forces.[8]

At the time of the Yuuzhan Vong War, the New Republic had recovered the Rebel Dream.[16]

The Rebel Dream served under General Wedge Antilles at Borleias. The Rebel Dream's starfighters and support craft featured a white-and-dark-gray color scheme during the siege of Borleias. She later joined the fleet of the fledgling Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, where she participated in the defense of Mon Calamari.[17]

Behind the scenes

The image of the Tyrant in the Star Wars Encyclopedia features an inscription on the hull that reads, "We Brake For Nobody," a reference to the parody film, Spaceballs.

Notes and references

  1. 1.0 1.1 The Tyrant, as visible in this scene from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, shares the same film model type as the Star Destroyer Devastator, seen here from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Both Star Destroyers visibly have flap-like devices attached to their three primary engine nacelles (visible more closely here), whereas the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer visibly lacks these "flaps," as illustrated here in The Empire Strikes Back by the Star Destroyer Avenger (this comparison is more closely visible by the authentic real-world film models for the Devastator, seen here, and the Avenger, seen here), which is confirmed to be an Imperial II-class by Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance. Given that the Devastator is confirmed to be an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer by Vader: The Ultimate Guide, this article likewise treats the Rebel Dream as an Imperial I-class based on the aforementioned identical visual evidence.
