A remote slicer was an illegal device which could be used to copy a starship's memory banks—either everything or only select parts-from remote. The Rock Dragon and Slave IV were known to have these pieces of equipment installed on board. Data that could be obtained in this fashion included star charts, the coordinates of recently-visited planets as well as other incriminating data kept within a vessel's main computer.
