A vanguard was a type of trooper that appeared during the years of the Great Galactic War and the Cold War that followed it circa 3,653 BBY.^[1] Vanguards served the Galactic Republic and were known for their proficiency with blaster rifles and personal energy shields as well as their phenomenal durability on the battlefield.^[2]

The vanguard is an advanced class for the trooper class in the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO video game. This advanced class specializes in blaster rifles, defensive shielding, and absorbing damage in battle. The Imperial counterpart for this archetype is the powertech.^[2]
