After Ruul was seized by the Galactic Empire, the Empire began to strip-mine the planet. In the strip-mined canyons, it set up several mines that plunged deeper into the cliff faces.

When the Rebel Alliance seized Ruul's central computer complex, it also took over several mines in the vicinity. These mines were recaptured along with the computer facility when Brenn Tantor led an effort to drive the Alliance off the planet.
