"Ryoo! Pooja! I'm so happy to see you!"
―Padmé Amidala[4]

Ryoo Naberrie was a Human female from Naboo. She was the elder daughter of Sola Naberrie and Darred Janren Naberrie, and the sister of Pooja Naberrie, as well as a niece of Padmé Amidala. This relationship made her the first cousin of twins Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa Solo.

Biography[]

Early childhood[]

"Look at them. I see the sparkle in your eyes when you watch my children. I know how much you love them."
―Sola Naberrie, referring to Ryoo and Pooja in conversation with her sister Padmé Amidala[4]

Ryoo Naberrie was a Human female born on the planet Naboo[1] in 28 BBY[2] within the influential Naboo House Naberrie,[5] to Sola Naberrie and Darred Janren Naberrie.[1] Ryoo was named after Sola's maternal grandmother,[1] Ryoo Thule,[6] who also shared her name with a variety of flower that grew near[1] the city[7] Keren.[1] Ryoo was born shortly after the marriage of her parents,[5] and Sola's parents, Ruwee and Jobal Naberrie, were delighted at the news that they were to become grandparents.[1] In 26 BBY,[2] Sola gave birth to another daughter, Pooja.[5]

Sola and Darred lived in the same[5] residential district[8] as Ruwee and Jobal in[5] Naboo's Human capital city Theed,[7] which allowed Sola and her daughters to make almost daily visits to the Naberrie family home.[8] They would also visit their family friend Jev Nerran.[5] Sola's sister, and therefore Ryoo's aunt, Padmé Amidala, loved both of her nieces dearly, and found comfort in their carefree spirits as a way of coping with the pressure of her work[1] as the senator of Naboo within the Galactic Republic.[9] Ryoo and Pooja loved their aunt's visits, as they often took place months apart from each other.[10] As a young girl, Ryoo owned a pet voorpak named Sanani, which she often dressed up to share imaginary adventures,[1] to the amusement of her mother.[5] When she was six years old, Ryoo attended school[1] and was forced to learn[5] classic futhork calligraphy, which she would vocally complain about.[1]

Meeting Anakin Skywalker[]

"This is Anakin. Anakin, this is Ryoo and Pooja!"
―Padmé Amidala, introducing her nieces to her future husband[4]

In 22 BBY,[11] Amidala was on Naboo visiting her sister's family and sat with Sola in a backyard while they watched Ryoo and Pooja wildly play a game of tag in a playhouse. As Amidala and Sola discussed the former's work in passing the Military Creation Act through the Galactic Senate, Sola kept an eye on her children, calling out to them to be careful. In the course of their discussion, Sola pressed Amidala on whether she was content in her occupation, and referred to her sister's love for her nieces as an indication that Amidala could prioritize her own family life over her work. As Ryoo and Pooja continued playing, they excitedly jumped around Amidala's astromech droid R2-D2, and later made up a whimsical song about the droid.[4]

Later, during a meeting about security concerns with Head of Security Captain Quarsh Panaka, Amidala recalled the image of her nieces playing together and found it painful to mentally shift away from it. Following a failed assassination attempt on Amidala on the planet Coruscant, she returned to Naboo with a protector, the Jedi Padawan Anakin Skywalker. Amidala arranged to spend time with her family at their home following a meeting with Naboo's Queen Jamillia. Ryoo and Pooja ran out of the house excitedly when they saw their aunt approaching. Amidala embraced them and twirled them around, before kissing them and leading them to Skywalker for an introduction. Both children blushed shyly until they noticed R2-D2's presence and rushed towards him,[4] dancing around the droid[10] while he happily beeped and whistled.[4]

As an adult, Pooja believed that she and Ryoo had thought that R2-D2 had been a gift from Skywalker to them. Both sisters were later heartbroken to learn that Amidala and Skywalker were not staying at their grandparent's house and were departing for Naboo's Lake Country. Pooja attributed these feelings to disappointment that R2-D2 would not remain with them. Amidala and Skywalker returned several days later to visit the family following the outbreak of the Clone Wars at the Battle of Geonosis. Skywalker's interactions with Ryoo and Pooja had made him a heroic figure in their eyes, and he and Amidala later married in secret on Naboo.[10]

Padmé Amidala's funeral and later life[]

"We'd heard that the Jedi had attempted to overthrow the Republic, and that most of the Jedi had been killed. To Ryoo and me, Anakin was our hero. We couldn't imagine him doing anything wrong."
―Pooja Naberrie, recalling her childhood[10]

Three years later, in 19 BBY,[10] Amidala passed away after giving birth to her twins, Luke and Leia, on the asteroid belt of Polis Massa following Skywalker's fall to the dark side of the Force.[12] Ryoo and Pooja were not told about the cause of Amidala's death, leading them to believe it was connected to the assassination attempts on Amidala's life.[10] Sola, Ruwee, and Jobal were given the false claim that Amidala had been killed by the Jedi, who had betrayed the Republic, when they had actually been destroyed by the machinations of Palpatine, the Supreme Chancellor turned Emperor of the new Galactic Empire.[13] Amidala's body was returned to Naboo, where a funeral march took place through Theed, attended by a large crowd. Ryoo and Pooja walked next to each other, with Ruwee, Jobal, and Sola nearby.[12]

Decades later, in 35 ABY, Ryoo was still alive when Pooja learned of Skywalker and Amidala's marriage from Leia Organa Solo, also learning that they were cousins. Shortly afterwards, she was interviewed about her recollections of Skywalker (before he became Vader) for the historical chronicle Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force. She mentioned her and Ryoo's experience in meeting Anakin Skywalker and was distressed to learn that the man she had met went onto become such a notorious Sith Lord.[10]

Personality and traits[]

"Anyway, if I remember right, I think Ryoo and I must have thought that Anakin had brought the droid to us as a present, because we just started dancing around it, right there in the street outside the house. We were so silly."
―Pooja Naberrie[10]

Ryoo was considered a temperamental child,[5] moreso than her sister. She vocally expressed her dislike of learning futhork calligraphy at school[1] and of having to do chores.[14] Ryoo and Pooja were both considered loveable,[15] and their carefree spirit provided relief to their aunt Padmé Amidala,[1] who loved them dearly.[4] Both Ryoo and Pooja were delighted by R2-D2's presence and the opportunity to play with the droid, becoming disappointed when he was not staying with them on Naboo.[10] Ryoo had fair skin, long brown hair, brown eyes, and stood at 1.17 meters tall.[1]

Equipment[]

When Amidala and Skywalker first visited the Naberrie home, Ryoo was wearing a dual-layered orange dress with long sleeves, a brown dress, and gray stockings with brown shoes. At Amidala's funeral, Ryoo wore a long blue hooded cloak with embroidered decorations on the front side.[14]

Behind the scenes[]

"Keira and Hayley had the coloring and the look we needed for the tight-knit family. And they take direction well, which is the most important thing."
―Casting Director Robin Gurland[16]

Ryoo Naberrie was portrayed by Keira Wingate in a deleted scene of Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, as well as in a brief scene of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.[17]
