The sand fly was a species of insect found on the planet Tatooine^[2] that buzzed around and disturbed banthas.^[1] Sand flies occasionally sat on moisture vaporators.^[2]

The sand fly was first mentioned in R. A. Salvatore's 1999 novel, Vector Prime. It was again mentioned in the 2011 novel Star Wars: The Old Republic: Deceived, written by Paul S. Kemp.
