The Scarab-class droid starfighter was a predecessor to the Vulture droid starfighter used by the Trade Federation.

[edit] Characteristics
The Scarab starfighter was a droid starfighter with a flat body and two outrigger wings, each connected to the main fuselage by a pair of heavy struts. The wings could lock down against the body while not in flight, and spring open to achieve maximum maneuverability in combat.
The multiple-purpose fighter could attack targets in space and air, as well as on the ground. Even though they lacked the agility of the later Vulture droid fighters, the Scarab was equipped with strong armor and deflector shields. Scarabs were also able to operate independently of a droid control unit, whereas the Vulture could not, possibly contributing to the scarabs slightly larger size.
[edit] History
Scarab starfighters were tested by the Trade Federation in the Naboo system and the Karthakk system prior to the Invasion of Naboo. Though effective, the Scarabs proved no match for the combined forces of Rhys Dallows, Vana Sage and Nym's pirates, who helped slow the Federation's march on Naboo and Lok.
The Trade Federation used mostly Vulture starfighters during the Battle of Naboo, meaning their tests were likely a failure. Though supplanted by the Vulture droid, Scarab starfighters were still in use ten years later, prior to the outbreak of the Clone Wars.
Following the execution of the Separatist Council by Darth Sidious's new apprentice, Darth Vader, any remaining Scarabs in the Confederate fleets were presumably de-activated.
