Biography
Edit
In 3,966 BBY, Jelavan's parents were tragically killed in an accident in Taris' Middle City, leaving him, his sister Shel, and younger brother Shay, orphans.[1] During his time at the Jedi Tower as the Padawan of Jedi Master Q'Anilia,[3] Jelavan became close friends with fellow Padawan Zayne Carrick.[2]
Jelavan was the most talented of the Padawans on Taris[1] and was the first to complete the assignment presented to them on Taris' rogue moon. This served as the final challenge of the Tarisian students' Jedi Trials.[4] Despite his accomplishments, Jelavan provided encouragement for his less-skilled friend Carrick, joking with him the morning before their potential Knighting ceremony and assuring him everything would be fine.[2]
However, the fateful night of the ceremony, Jelavan arrived uncharacteristically late at the Knighting. He had been escorting his brother and sister home since even the Middle City was becoming dangerous. When Jelavan placed his lightsaber in the storage area, he noticed that the Masters were wearing their lightsabers, which were traditionally never worn on the Temple floor. When he asked about this, the Masters replied that it was part of the ceremony. Jelavan noticed that Carrick's Master Lucien Draay was carrying his lightsaber as well, indicating that Carrick (who had just arrived on the Temple grounds) was to be Knighted as well. Jelavan and the other Padawans were surprised and happy for him, but they realized that something was amiss, since Carrick always came last in every test. In response, Master Xamar commented that Carrick possessed a "special relationship" with the Force that would hopefully increase with time. This further confused the Padawans, but Q'Anilia insisted that the Mandalorian Wars called for more Knights and Taris, among other planets, needed all the Jedi Order could muster.[5]
Jelavan knew the Masters were lying and said so. Increasingly frustrated, he asserted that they treated Carrick as a "court jester" and never took him seriously. When Raana Tey objected that the Masters had known Carrick for a long time, Jelavan interrupted and asserted that this contradicted the Masters' own teachings on the Unifying Force, which never held personal feelings above duty. After a further challenge to Q'Anilia, Jelavan demanded to know what was really going on. At this point, the Masters decided to wait no longer to unfold their plot; Jelavan and his friends were killed in the Padawan Massacre of Taris.[5]
Later, when Carrick turned himself in, Lucien Draay told him that the Masters had originally intended to frame Shad Jelavan for the murders. Whereas Carrick's late arrival was expected, Jelavan's was not. This, along with Jelavan's insight and assertiveness surprised them and forced them to action; Carrick became the scapegoat instead. Carrick was distressed to learn that Jelavan and the other Padawans had not truly believed he was "good enough" to deserve Knighthood.[5]
