Shanks was a lieutenant in the Imperial Navy and he served as a military liaison to the House of Tagge under the command of Baron Orman Tagge. He had hoped that being involved with such a respected family would help his military career in the Empire. Shanks was part of the Tagge led operation where Imperial TIE fighters carried out attacks on the Rebel base on Yavin 4 from the Achtnak Turbine Station hidden within the thick atmosphere of the planet Yavin.
