Shock troopers were a special type of military personnel used by various organizations throughout the galaxy. They usually acted as police or as elite soldiers reserved for operations requiring speed and skill. Some shock troopers, such as those commanded by the Togorian Kr'saang, acted as mercenaries.

Shock troopers were elite members of the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars and were led by Clone Commander Thire. When the Confederacy of Independent Systems attacked Coruscant in 19 BBY, shock troopers fought the invading droid forces and prevented the destruction of some of Coruscant's most ancient and revered edifices. Under Palpatine's new regime, they were assigned as escorts and bodyguards to the Emperor.
