The Sith Academy on Korriban was a facility in use during the Jedi Civil War, dedicated to training Force-sensitives in the ways of the Sith, and running archaeological projects in the Valley of the Dark Lords.

HistoryEdit

The exact time of establishment of the academy is unclear, though it was probably founded sometime during the Great Sith War by the Brotherhood of the Sith and continued its existence even after the defeat of Exar Kun; it was in full operation as of 3,993 BBY. Strangely, the Jedi Order seemed to have been aware of the academy's existence and yet never took any action against this dangerous threat, despite the existence of organizations such as the Covenant devoted to eliminating dark siders. Revan's Sith EmpireEdit

Revan and Malak used the academy upon their return as Sith Lords to train Dark Jedi for their empire. Its students during this time were either Force-sensitives looking to take a side in the Jedi Civil War, or fallen Jedi, disillusioned with either the Jedi, the war or the Republic in general. [1]

Whether an initial founder or former student, Jorak Uln was an early headmaster of the academy. In later years this passed to Uthar Wynn as he overthrew the former master in the manner of the Sith. Upon Revan's return to Korriban during his search for the Star Maps, Wynn was killed in a plot involving Revan and Yuthura Ban, Wynn's own apprentice. After Uthar´s death, Revan convinced Yuthura to leave the academy and rejoin the Jedi. However, the redemption of Yuthura and the death of Uthar merely began the incident known as the Skirmish on Korriban. When leaving the valley, Revan and his crew were interrogated by the Sith Guards about why he left the tomb of Naga Sadow alone. In this, he accidentally gave himself away. The resulting battle pitted the entirety of the Academy against the crew of the Ebon Hawk. However, due to the experience and training that the crew had and the sheer power and fighting prowess of the former Dark Lord, they managed to defeat the Sith and escape, killing most of the Sith present at the academy. The history of the academy all but ended with the climax of the Jedi Civil War. Shortly after the destruction of the Star Forge in the Battle of Rakata Prime, infighting at the academy and elsewhere, known as the Sith Civil War turned Korriban into a graveyard once more. It was looted after the First Battle of Korriban. [3]

In 3,951 BBY, Meetra Surik came to Korriban to search for Jedi Master Lonna Vash. Surik encountered an academy totally different than Revan had during his Star Forge quest: due to lack of Sith teachers, the academy had been completely automated, with students relying on computers for basic training. As Surik wandered the emptied academy, encountering only tuk'ata and cloaked Sith assassins of the Sith Triumvirate, she found Vash's corpse inside the interrogation room. On her way out, she briefly dueled with Darth Sion. However, at the urging of Kreia—who preferred not to accompany Surik and thus stayed on the Ebon Hawk—she fled the battle, knowing she would have another chance to battle the Sith Lord. [3]

True Sith EmpireEdit

The Sith Empire re-established the Academy when they recaptured Korriban during the Great Galactic War. [4]

The Academy trained hundreds of Sith over the years, swelling the ranks of the Warriors and Inquisitors, eventually following the Great Galactic War, the Sith Empire was losing more Sith than it was gaining, allowing for slaves and even aliens to train and become acolytes, although this was frowned upon by many Imperials.[4]

Eventually the Emperor's Wrath and Darth Nox arrived and were trained, becoming immensely important members of the Sith Empire and reaching apprenticeship far quicker than usual acolytes. [4]

Brotherhood of DarknessEdit

The academy was reopened once more during the New Sith Wars following the Battle of Korriban, and a young Darth Bane trained there. At that time, it—along with most of the other major "historical" sites—had been pillaged by the Jedi in their attempt to destroy all remaining vestiges of Sith lore. Due to their efforts, the academy's formerly prestigious archives were now forced to rely on haphazardly arranged books and manuscripts, which were practically ignored by Skere Kaan's Brotherhood of Darkness.[5]

One SithEdit

More than a thousand years later, the academy was under the rule of Darth Krayt and his Sith Empire, where the young Darth Wyyrlok IV was taking training in honor of her father. Darth Talon was trained there as well by her mentor, until she became one of Krayt's loyal Hands.[2]

Entrance to and life at the Sith Academy was difficult. To be admitted, prospective students were required to impress one of the teachers or students who was already in the Academy, receiving as proof a medallion, or to kill a student and take his or her medallion. Fallen Jedi usually did not have much difficulty in gaining admission, because they had already been trained in the ways of the Force. Prospective students were forced to compete against each other in a group; one would gain enough prestige to impress the headmaster and become a true Sith, while the others would be forced to wait a year before trying again, assuming they survived. Competition was fierce, and many students were killed in their attempts to outdo their competitors. Further, the Sith held no qualms about killing students to either facilitate an acquaintance's acceptance of the dark side or preventing other students being held back. Some students preferred to engage each other in a lethal duel within the Sith training room. Even the Academy's headmaster was not immune to backstabbing. It was not uncommon for a headmaster to be overthrown by his or her second-in-command. Whenever this or other political intrigue hit the academy, people had a tendency to disappear. [1]

The cruelty was further demonstrated by the penchant of Academy students to visit the nearby colony of Dreshdae and torment hopefuls wishing to enter the academy. The Sith also kept their own store of captive Republic soldiers for practice in torture and battle, and had a prison wing to detain and interrogate prisoners. It was also complete with an interrogation room, where Sith officers brutally interrogated their prisoners. [1]

The Sith Academy had many headmasters throughout its history. During the Old Sith Wars two included Jorak Uln and Uthar Wynn.[1]

During the New Sith Wars Qordis was the academy's headmaster.[5]

LayoutEdit

ExteriorEdit

Located near the Valley of the Dark Lords, the academy was a large building which was easily distinguished by its pyramidal structure. [1]

InteriorEdit

During the Cold War, the academy had been extended a bit and it was composed by many rooms and several levels. In the first level, at the entrance, it included a small holocron-shaped Pyramid. It had several other rooms, one specifically would lead to the Ritual Chambers where a beast called the Bloodfiend lived. The second level was composed by several dormitory rooms including the Academy Guard's. The third level had a Dark Council Chamber although there was another, smaller in size, on the Empire's capital of Dromund Kaas.[4]

Behind the scenesEdit

The Sith Academy of Korriban made its first appearance in the RPG game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and not longer after, making another appearance in the game's sequel. It was since then used in many novels, including the renowned Darth Bane trilogy. It has recently made an appearance again on a Videogame, this time the Massively multiplayer online role-playing game Star Wars: The Old Republic, released by BioWare in December 2011 as the spawning and ending place for both the Sith Inquisitor and Sith Warrior classes' storylines.
