A spy ray was a sophisticated piece of wartime espionage equipment developed by Doctor Godera and was used by the Republic Strategic Information Service.

This portable equipment needed to be assembled at a site where they projected a beam of particles which either passed through or reflected off matter depending on the intensity of the beam. Any reflected particles were translated into high-resolution images of their target. The operational range of a spy ray was up to half a solar system away with it being one of the most advanced pieces of equipment used in reconnaissance in the years after the Great Galactic War.

SIS agent Theron Shan accompanied Jedi Master Ngani Zho along with the Black Sun criminal Teff'ith on a recon mission of the Vesla system that was one of the Black Sectors which were ceded to the Sith Empire after the Treaty of Coruscant. On the second day, they assembled a modular spy ray and by the third day they used it to survey the system secretly where they uncovered the horrors done to entire planets by Darth Mekhis of the Dark Council.
