[edit] Characteristics
Different models existed, but most followed similar design-attributes. These included more than two sensor globes per command tower, bridges that were less visible from outside than on contemporary designs, few to no terraces underneath the tower, and five to seven main engines complemented by a number of smaller auxiliary engines.
[edit] History
One noted ship became infamous as the vessel of the dreaded space pirate Crimson Jack and his gang, who discovered a damaged battlecruiser adrift after the Rebels' first great victory, killed the remainder of its Imperial crew and refurbished and modified it with backing from the gangster Jabba the Hutt. The vessel was eventually damaged beyond repair over Drexel II and left as space junk.
Being substantially larger than vessels like the Imperial-class Star Destroyers, these warships participated in large-scale operations like the Siege of Yavin, where the entire Gordian Reach sector was blockaded by countless warships belonging to the Imperial Navy and the powerful Tagge family. Lord Darth Vader utilized several battlecruisers during his hunt for Luke Skywalker in this time period.

[edit] Behind the scenes
The origins of these designs can be found in early concept art for both the Imperial-class Star Destroyer and the Executor-class Star Dreadnought. Some comic panels even copied the different angles from the production drawings, with some minor additions or changes.
Although Star Battlecruiser is another term used in the Empire, it is unknown if the vessels in this article rank among them.
