Publisher's summary
A perfect jumping-on point for new readers, the wildest space adventure in the Old Republic begins a new story arc featuring stolen starships, killer droids, and the debut of a dangerous villain!
When fugitive Padawan Zayne Carrick and his small-time con artist cohort Gryph part ways with their friends on The Last Resort, the odd couple sets out to score a new ship. Soon enough, the two find that helping themselves to something they can't afford carries a much higher price than they bargained for! Meanwhile, a sinister power from across the galaxy begins hunting the Last Resort, determined to stop at nothing until the ship's owners are within his grasp!
Plot Summary
Outside their ship, The Last Resort on the planet of Ralltiir, Zayne Carrick and Jarael have a playful joust before parting ways. Realizing the danger of all hiding together, the group decided to split up, with Camper, Jarael, and Elbee leaving on The Last Resort, and Zayne and Gryph finding another ship to leave the planet on. After an emotional goodbye, Camper and Jarael take-off and notice a large Republic armada forming above Ralltiir before jumping to hyperspace.
Later that night, Zayne and Gryph wait at a landing-pad for a ship that Gryph hired someone to steal for them. After landing, the thief, a Trandoshan named Slyssk, exists the ship with a blaster rifle and demands more than the nine thousand credits that Gryph had promised him. Rather than engaging in combat, Gryph devises a plan with Zayne to make it appear that Gryph saves Slyssk’s life from a piece of falling debris that Zayne used his Force powers to move. Instead of accepting the old deal however, Slyssk pledges his life to Gryph for saving him and insists on travelling with them. Just then, the rightful owners of the ship find them, and the trio gets onboard and leaves Raaltiir.
Running into the same convoy that Camper and Jarael had seen, they are unable to bypass it as it turns out that the armada had been waiting for them; the Little Bivoli is a provisions ship meant to feed Republic soldiers fighting against the Mandalorians. Forced to take formation with the rest of the fleet, the trio make the jump to hyperspace towards the front lines.
Aboard The Last Resort, Camper makes maintenance adjustments in the ship’s hold when he notices an opened crate. Mistakenly brushing it off as nothing, he is attacked by an HK-24 series assassin droid which then turns its blaster on Jarael.
