The game follows Renegade Squadron, a unit of the Alliance to Restore the Republic organized and led by Col Serra. The game's story mode has 11 missions. The game supports online play for up to 16 players. Renegade Squadron includes several new features, including support for 16 player infrastructure online play, and customizable players. It should also be noted that when you have the option to spawn as a hero, you are no longer forced to respawn at a command post, but automatically become the hero wherever you currently are. Space heroes, as well as hero Capture the Flag, ability to enter Capital Ships (previously unavailable on the PSP), an all new Campaign, a brand-new Galactic Conquest, and online leaderboards are new features as well.

Renegade Squadron focuses on a group of Rebel operatives, organized by Millennium Falcon pilot Han Solo. These operatives were used to accomplish covert missions for the Alliance during the Galactic Civil War. This story appears to be in direct contrast with that of Battlefront II, which revolved around the Imperial501st Legion. There are eleven battles for this story mode.
Battlefront: Renegade Squadron follows Star Wars Battlefront II by having a Campaign Mode with Mission Objectives, such as retrieving artifacts, destroying certain objects, or defeating certain enemies. While Battlefront II followed the Republic and the Rise of the Empire, Renegade Squadron follows Han Solo's Renegade Squadron, led by Commander Col Serra. Jedi Master Tionne Solusar speaks with Serra about his escapades in the Renegade Squadron against the Empire.
Han Solo created Renegade Squadron and convinced Col Serra to lead it. Their first mission was to reinforce Yavin 4. The Squadron helped evacuate the planet after the destruction of the Death Star.
Before the destruction of Alderaan, Senator Bail Prestor Organa possessed an artifact with data on a holocron that was needed to locate a new base. The holocron was encased in phrik, a material so powerful that it survived the destruction of the planet. Renegade Squadron recovered it and defeated Boba Fett in his Slave I.Battle of Alderaan
Renegade Squadron landed on Ord Mantell to sustain repairs after the battle and to relax with Han Solo and Chewbacca. They had to escape and defeat IG-88 who attacked them in a cantina.
When the Squadron escaped Ord Mantell, they discovered that Admiral Ackbar was captured by the Empire and was about to be sent to a Imperial prison colony on Kessel to mine spice. The Squadron was sent to rescue him from a Star Destroyer.
Ackbar told Col Serra that he had been scoping Boz Pity for a new base when they headed for Saleucami, but Boba Fett intercepted and captured them. He sold the crew as slaves to the Hutts on Tatooine and the Squadron was sent to rescue them.
After the successful mission on Tatooine, the Squadron discovered that Boba Fett had placed a tracker on their R2 Unit and tracked them to their new base on Boz Pity, where the Empire attacked them.
With the Empire discovering their new base on Hoth, the Renegade Squadron was forced to defend it, and was responsible for the ability of the Rebel troops to evacuate safely. The Squadron was even forced to stall Darth Vader himself.
After escaping Hoth, the Rebels were ambushed by an Imperial Fleet. They had to continue to help the rest of the Rebels escape, and had to fight Darth Vader in his TIE Advanced.
After Han Solo was unfrozen from carbonite, the Renegade Squadron was put back in business. During the planning stages for the Battle of Endor, the Renegade Squadron was assigned to attack Emperor Palpatine himself. They assaulted Palpatine on Korriban in the Valley of the Dark Lords in an attempt to steal vital information.
With the Battle of Endor underway, the Renegade Squadron was sent to Sullust for a decoy mission to divert some Imperial Troops but the Emperor sensed their ploy and sends IG-88, now invincible with a shield generator, to trap the Squadron on Sullust and they found themselves trying to escape.
Galactic Conquest is only available to the Rebellion and Empire factions. Galactic Conquest unlike Battlefront II doesn't follow a single ship, units are dispatched from planets under your control. Unlike Battlefront II, at the start, there are an equal amount of planets divided between the factions and a majority of neutral planets to be conquered. The base planets can have up to 150 soldiers, and when attacked, the aggressor must take out the enemy on both space and land battles. Once the primary planet has been taken the game is over, no matter how many other planets are in the enemy or neutral control. The map is divided into four sectors and quadrants with commanders for each. There are four phases to conquest:

Logisitics tech
Level one - Starting planetary troop cap of 50. (starting amount)
Level two - Brings troop cap to eighty. Costs 250.

Level one - Starting infantry tech level.
Level two - Damage reduced by 20%. Costs 500.
Level Three - Unlocks Heroes for ground and space battles

Level Two - A-wings and TIE Interceptors

Leaders
Darth Vader - Troops slowly regenerate health, heroes may be used more frequently
Han Solo - Troops deal more damage during battle, heroes may be used more frequently
The Emperor/Mon Mothma - Planetary income increased by 30 credits for every planet in this commander's sector.
Leia Organa/Moff Tarkin - Halves the cost of tech upgrades and leaders.
Admiral Ackbar/Admiral Thrawn - Allows two moves per turn, but must be launched from the commander's sector.
Movement
A time when the player or AI can make a move to take or invade a planet.
Reinforce
A time when players are allowed to move troops from one of their own planets to another planet under their control. Say for example the player were to take a planet. They would require a considerable force from an already controlled planet to defend the newly taken planet. Another planet would then be able to send troops over to reinforce the planet that the invasion party came from.
Sectors and Quadrants
Southern Quadrant - Naboo, Tatooine, Geonosis
Western Quadrant - Hoth (space and land when base planet), Endor, Sullust, Mustufar
Eastern Quadrant - Alderaan (space), Kashyyyk (space and land when base planet), Boz Pity, Saleucami, Kessel (space)
Northern Quadrant - Ord Mantel, Mygeeto, Yavin (space and land when base planet), Korriban
There is no class system. Instead, players are able to customize their soldier to fit the battle's needs.
The player has 100 credits to spend on gear. Each item in a section has a certain value. The player can choose to equip whatever they want, providing they have enough credits. Depending on the battle or the situation, the player can unequip certain items to regain credits and then equip a different item.

Blaster rifle. 25 Pts. The staple infantry weapon throughout the galaxy.
ARC caster. 30 Pts. Fires an arc of electricity that hits not only the target but other nearby enemies. Has no effect on vehicles.
Carbonite gun. 15 Pts. Freezes targets in place for a short time. the longer the shot is charged for, the longer the victim will be immobilized. Is non-lethal and has no effect on Tanks and other craft
Incinerator. 20 Pts. Emits an intense wave of fire that causes lots of damage to close range targets. Has minute effect on vehicles.
Shotgun. 30 Pts. Fires a spread of bolts making it deadly at close range.
Sniper rifle. 25 Pts. A blaster rifle modified with added sights and accuracy for long-ranged efficiency. Has extended zoom.
Chaingun. 40 Pts. Deadly but requires a short time to charge up and will overheat after excessive use.
Bowcaster. 30 Pts. Fires a Spread of bolts. Hold and then release button to launch a deadly charged blast.
Missile launcher. 25 Pts. A firing rocket which explodes on impact.
Aids on the change of your squadron's appearance. There are five options, these being: Body, Head, Color 1, Color 2 and Insignia. Each type of body has their own Head options, while the colors stay the same. Each side has its own Personalization menu with different options. Personalization has no cost.
Instant action mode is the same as it is in Battlefront II. The player must capture the enemy's command posts or kill all of the enemies while defending their own command posts.
A new mode specifically for Battlefront: Renegade Squadron is Hero Capture the Flag, a modified version of 2 Flag CTF. Each side has one flag that they must defend while they must go to the other side and retrieve the enemy flag. The object is to run to the enemy's base, or kill the person holding their flag, and bring it to your flag's respawn point. When the flag is dropped there is a thirty second time limit before it respawns. You are also able to pick up your own flag if it is dropped and defend it. If you are carrying your flag and are killed, the enemy can take it. The catch to this is if you take your flag to its respawn point, or take it from its respawn point when it spawns, you become the hero for that map. A hero always has their own flag and cannot pick up the enemy flag, but they can use all their powers. For instance, a regular infantry unit cannot use a jetpack with a flag but Boba/Jango Fett can.
Battlefront: Renegade Squadron contains unique awards available to the player for various accomplishments. Most awards have bronze, silver, and gold variants. In order to win a silver, you must must first have earned a bronze, and in order to win a gold, you must first have earned a bronze and a silver.
The Heroes have a wide variety of powers. Jedi generally have lightsaber as primary weapon and saber throw or Force push, with a few exceptions like Yoda. Sith primarily use lightsabers, with Force lightning and Force choke as interchangeable secondaries. The exceptions to this ruling is Darth Maul and Darth Vader who actively use saber throw. Asajj Ventress and General Grievous use lightsabers, but have Power ups, in unlimited quantities, but do take time to charge. Other characters such as the Fetts and Chewbacca have multiple primaries and multiple secondaries, all in unlimited quantities. Some such as Chewbacca also have high power secondaries like remote rockets with virtually instant reloads.

Hoth, Kashyyyk, Mustafar, Mygeeto and Naboo levels are direct ports of maps from Star Wars: Battlefront II, reduced in size, though the Mustafar map is bigger than the PSP version's.

Differences between Renegade Squadron and previous Battlefront gamesEdit
There are quite a few, simply because Renegade Squadron is exclusive to the PSP. The gameplay techniques are different, as the PSP has one analog stick, and fewer buttons than the console controllers. The gameplay, however, is mostly similar. One of the main changes was that there was no definite soldier classes. During the battle, you could customize your player, which was useful in many cases, eg. If a AT-RT is coming, at a command post you can customize your character to equip a rocket launcher, making it easier to defeat the AT-RT, and change back to your regular weapon after.
Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron features some maps ported from Star Wars: Battlefront II. However, in all cases, the maps have been reduced in size:
Hoth - The map is much more condensed in comparison to the previous game. There is only one AT-AT (which cannot be moved by the player, instead it moves on rails towards enemy command posts), and the Shield Generator is no longer destroyable, but is instead a capturable command post. The layout of Echo Base is also slightly different.
Kashyyyk - Players cannot go behind the Sea Wall, nor can they ascend to the beach-front huts to take control of turrets on the upper platforms. One command post is missing and the layout of the command posts has been changed.
Naboo - The path to the Office and Plaza has been cut off by a wall to the west of the Palace command post.
Mustafar - The Control Room is smaller, and the entrance from the Mining Walkway has been cut off (as in the PSP version of the previous game). Of note, however, is that the map is bigger than the same map in the PSP version of Star Wars: Battlefront II.
Mygeeto - The North East Main Platform is missing.
Yavin IV - Players cannot ascend to the Overlook as the bridge has been damaged, and there is an invisible barrier preventing the player from crossing the river.
In one of the cutscenes for the Ord Mantell Mission, when IG-88 first enters the battle, he is seen carrying an E-11 blaster and an A-280 rifle, whereas in game he carries two E-11s.
If the missiles fired by the AATs are aimed too low to the ground,the result is the missiles simply inflict damage on the vehicle itself.
You can overspend credits by going to multiplayer, starting a battle (Local or online), customize any way you want to, then disconnecting.
There is a special glitch where a player can make the orb that appears from a charged up Bowcaster, Arc Caster, or Carbonite Freeze Gun detach from the weapon and stay floating in the air for the remainder of the game.
The Arc Caster is the easiest one to do. Charge up the weapon. When it is fully charged, switch weapons very fast, then land on the Arc Caster. Shoot once.
There are two methods to making Bowcaster and Carbonite Freeze Gun orbs. One is to stand near a speeder, hold X Button (or R Button), and get on and off very fast. Then, get off the speeder and release X Button.
If you are standing near a large vehicle with the incinerator, by continually firing the incinerator and entering the vehicle at the same time, you can make the stream of fire stay floating in the air. This does not work with speeder bikes.
By going to certain spots on Endor,getting on a speeder bike, then getting off, you can fall through the floor.
It is possible to get out of Boz Pity: go to the Rebel command post Sacrificial Chamber, grab a tauntaun, leave the command post, turn left back up against the wall, get out of the tauntaun and you will fall through the map. If you have a jetpack, as soon as you start falling through, use the jetpack and fly up and you should fly through a ledge. If you continue flying forward, you can go behind the statue and on top of the base by the monuments.
On Endor, if you activate regenerate right before the scene where Chewbacca appears in the AT-ST, the scene will show a regenerate circle with no occupant.
On Kashyyyk, in the Clone Wars era, if you play as Yoda for the republic, AI enemy players say in imperial voices when they attack you.
Jango Fett and other villains, for the CIS, say in a droid's voice when attacking heroes of the opposite side.
Wookiee Bounty hunter Head is Replica of Snoova, a wookiee bounty hunter.
On Ord Mantell you can see lots of familiar vehicles in the junkyard such as an AT-ST head, a damaged Hailfire droid, an ARC-170 starfighter and a Spider Walker.
