Subspace was the medium used for long range communications such as subspace radio and subspace transponders. It was a distinct dimension from realspace, like hyperspace and otherspace.^[1]

Behind the scenesEdit

In Star Trek, subspace radio is the primary form of communication used by Starfleet. Messages sent through subspace, rather than real space, can bypass the physical limitations of the latter and exceed the speed of light. Subspace also appears in the Stargate series as the equivalent to the hyperspace dimension. Subspace has been seen as an element of faster-than-light travel on a number of occasions.
