Sump was the humid, impoverished homeworld of the Nuknog, located in the Koradin sector of the Outer Rim Territories.
Around 1,000 BBY the native Nuknog were persuaded by a mining consortium to sell their entire planet in exchange for employment, free food and housing. The Nuknog spent the next several centuries in a state of indentured servitude, slaving in the substandard mines and factories, working on poorly-maintained equipment in unsafe conditions.
Sump became more polluted and dilapidated as the centuries passed. Mining towns sprung up, then fell rapidly into decay and filth. Dust and contaminants filled the air. Across the planet, forests died and left behind toxic swamps, incapable of supporting any but the most mutated and aggressive life-forms. Eventually, the Jedi Order and the Galactic Senate dissolved the mining consortium, but the damage to Sump was irreparable. The landscape was blotted with abandoned factories, empty mines, filthy urban sprawl, and waste dumps.
Few Nuknog had the means to leave their homeworld, but those who did jumped at the chance, sometimes selling themselves into slavery just to gain the right to board the rare passing freighter.
