Sundari (city)

This article is about the New Mandalorian capital city. You may be looking for the mining world in the Mid Rim.

Sundari was the domed capital city of the New Mandalorian faction of Mandalorians on the Outer Rim world, Mandalore. Located in one of Mandalore's desert regions, by the time of the Clone Wars, Sundari was home to a large number of New Mandalorians including their leader, Duchess Satine Kryze. The city's Peace Park was the target of terrorism from the radical and violent Mandalorian splinter group, the Death Watch, and later fell victim to corruption among its government's officials.

HistoryEdit

In approximately 730 BBY, following a significant growth in Mandalorian militancy that alarmed the Galactic Republic and its Jedi protectors, a brief and targeted conflict broke out between the Republic and the Mandalorians that brought devastation to the Mandalore sector. While many of the warrior clans scattered, out of the ashes rose the New Mandalorian faction. Doing away with many of the old warrior codes the Mandalorians had historically followed, the New Mandalorians put forward the idea that the best opportunity for Mandalorian survival and prosperity would come through being peaceful, neutral, and tolerant.[5] The New Mandalorians claimed Sundari as their capital city[1]—standing beside Keldabe, Mandalore's long-standing capital[6][7]—living in the deserts of Mandalore as they established a society with pacifism and nonviolence as central tenets. Upon instituting these changes, any of the Mandalorians in their society who refused the reform and insisted upon carrying on their warrior ways, were banished to Mandalore's moon, Concordia. Traditional Mandalorian armor became a rare sight in Sundari.[1]

The Peace Park at the heart of Sundari

Around 21 BBY, in the midst of the galaxy-spanning Clone Wars, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi journeyed to Sundari during an investigation ordered by the Jedi Council to ascertain Mandalore's true loyalties in the face of rumors of Separatist ties. While there, the city's Peace Park was bombed by a member of the violent Mandalorian splinter group known as the Death Watch. Kenobi attempted to apprehend the bomber, taking part in a lengthy chase that ended at a dead-end balcony. After a brief struggle, the bomber took his own life by leaping from the balcony's edge.[1] It was also in Sundari that the New Mandalorians' Prime Minister, Almec, received a report from a scout who informed him that the Death Watch were amassing an army at their base on Mandalore's moon, Concordia.[8]

A Sundari hospital

When Duchess Satine Kryze—the leader of the New Mandalorians—declared Mandalore a neutral entity in the Clone Wars, the Republic halted trade to the Outer Rim world.[4] Cut off[5] from Mandalore's farming communities,[6] and without Republic aid, Sundari began to suffer from food shortages that left many of its residents starving.[4] To remedy the dire situation, Prime Minister Almec took it upon himself to establish a black market trade network in order to get food to the New Mandalorian people.[2] But the illegal intake of supplies to Sundari came at a dangerous cost: Moogan smugglers seeking to increase their profits diluted the tea they were importing with the dangerous chemical, slabin. Consumed by countless New Mandalorian school children, Sundari's hospitals were soon filled with poison victims. Fortunately, Duchess Kryze and Republic Senator Padmé Amidala were able to root out the Moogan smuggling ring and deliver the antidote to the poisoned children.[4] Almec's complicity was uncovered by several cadets from Sundari's Royal Academy of Government and the Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano, and exposed by Kryze. Almec was then incarcerated in a Sundari prison.[2]

CharacteristicsEdit

The capital city of the peaceful New Mandalorian faction, Sundari was located in one of Mandalore's desert regions, with it's expansive black dome appearing in stark contrast to the barren flats that surrounded it. Nestled within the heavy dome, Sundari was made up of a complex series of rectangular and often cube-shaped buildings, all constructed in close quarters. Among Sundari's most notable features were it's tranquil Peace Park,[1] its commercial shipping docks, its state of the art hospital,[4] and its impressive Royal Academy of Government.[2]

Behind the scenesEdit

Sundari's Royal Academy of Government

Sundari first appeared in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series second season episode, "The Mandalore Plot". It appeared again in the second season episode, "Duchess of Mandalore", before hitting the screen again during the third season episodes "Corruption" and "The Academy".

Sundari shares its name with the mining planet Sundari, also in the Star Wars universe. In The Clone Wars series, Sundari is referred to as the capital of Mandalore, a role previously established as belonging to Keldabe. With The Essential Atlas retconing the Mandalorians appearing in the television series as the "New Mandalorian" faction, Sundari has become the New Mandalorians' capital city.

In some copies of The Art of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Sundari was incorrectly stated to be the capital of Kalevala, the home planet of Duchess Satine Kryze. However, the Episode Guide for the "The Mandalore Plot" states that it is located on Mandalore.
