Talk:Aurebesh

From Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki.

Not sure how to do it myself, but the article title needs to be changed to Aurebesh, not Aurabesh.

[edit] Aruabesh is Galactic Basic?

Aruabesh (Or Aurebesh) is Galactic Basic? If that is so, then the sounds underneath the letters in the article are how you pronounce them.

Someone may have to chance the lines in the movies to reflect that...

  • Yes, and AFAIK the movies have changed in the DVD edition so that the texts that appear are meaningful MoffRebus 21:59, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure Basic is the spoken language, and Aurebesh is the name for the alphabet. Totema1 22:53, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What're the numbers?

Is there any source for how numerals are written? I don't have my sourcebooks handy at the moment... --Trip

Not sure. I think the fonts have numerical characters MoffRebus 07:43, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
I remember seeing an aurebesh numeral chart on wikipedia. I'll get it for you.--The All-knowing Sith'ari 14:03, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Here it is.--The All-knowing Sith'ari 14:06, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Wait, better idea. Check the Battle Droid page in in the phantom menace visual dictionary. I think the numerals are there.--The All-knowing Sith'ari 19:45, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
They also use regular Roman numerals. See File:Zann_screen.JPG. JorrelFraajic 19:54, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Numbers also occur on the displays of Anakin's racing pod (in TPM). But they are hardly readable... Domlith 13:08, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
Does anyone know the source of the image? It has been deleted on Wikipedia, and I suspect that it was fan made using a fan-made font. —MJBurrage(TC) 17:38, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
This image and the one on the article don't match up. A few quick looks and it's obvious. --Darth shohet 02:05, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Check this, it has the numbers, although the creator hadn`t originaly placed ´em. http://www.geocities.com/jayne_hundt/alphabet/aurebesh.html also check the http://www.echostation.com/features/aurebesh.htm article.

[edit] Font and Image not the same

  • In Mike Webb's TrueType Aurebesh font, some characters don't match.. they are:

. : ; - " ' ( ) $

I may forget some. Lytcha Lauma 04:00, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Aurabesh by screenshot

Could someone determine what is scrolling across Vos Gesal Street in the Uscru Entertainment District just as Zam Wesell crashes into the street? It's obviously Aurebesh but scrolls fast. The image on Vos Gesal shows some of it, however it is small and possibly in reverse. -- Riffsyphon1024 14:12, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Chart

Hey i did trying to print out the chart image but it comes out solid black can someone send me the image Unsigned comment by Predated (talk • contribs).

[edit] New Essential Guide Series Aurebesh

The Wikipedia article on Aurebesh mentions that the New Essential Guide Series frequently uses correct Aurebesh. I have have looked at my New Essential Guides and confirmed this. Would someone please add that to the article?

[edit] Galactic Campaign Gudie Aurebesh

I recently noticed that Aurebesh appears in some illustration in the Galactic Campaign Guide of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game (published by Wizards of the Coast). For example, in the picture of the Rodian in a cockpit on page 128, two screens display Aurebesh text. I started to translate it and discovered that the first word on the top screen is "personal." I was going to translate the rest but I am not very familiar with Aurebesh and it was a very slow process. Has anyone else noticed the Galactic Campaign Guide's text and has anyone translated it? This Aurebesh appearance should also be noted in the article.

I'm pretty good at reading Aurebesh. I only have the Hero's guide with me at the moment, but the HoloNet image shows things like News: Live from Geonosis and Weather: Clear Skies Everywhere. Sports: All Bets are off. There are some people there, a red protocol droid has "CTPO" under its caption, along with a female named Cali and a male named Liss. That's quite a bit of text, each message is repeated twice in the image, if anyone has it. 75.46.20.95 03:26, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Wait, I've got it. The screen says:

"Personal log, I flew to Coruscant today and got myself royally beaten up. I was sitting in a sports bar when these two thugs with three eyes made a rude comment about Rodian theatre.

Needless to say, I let them have it!!"

The other one is obscured, so it's harder to read. But that's the translation if you want it. Some parts include an obscured "reduce the swelling" and "what a day", which makes sense since the Rodain in the image has his arm tied with cloth and a shiner on his eye.

"... L LOG, three... [ta?]ken a bruised... [an?]d a laceration... my left arm.

...friend told me...o put a kaadu...[st?]eak on my face... [r?]educe the swelling.

What a d[ay?]."

[edit] Text removal

This edit removed the entire "Appearances" section, which I thought was valuable. The edit summary just says "Repco" which doesn't mean anything to me. Why was this removed? Powers 21:03, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

  • I've put the section back in, although it needs to be cleaned up. I believe "Repco" was probably a failed edit meant to include an appearance in Republic Commando - \\Captain Kwenn// Ahoy! 21:05, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Revert to the Old Imege

Image created by en:User:Arsonal that is Wikipedias discription of this Imege i think we should use the offocail West End Games diogram insted. i'm unsure if this one can be fully trusted - CorellianJedi

[edit] In X-wing cockpit?

I currently don't have my copies of the movies with me, but can anyone who does please check Luke's X-wing before going to Dagobah, either in ESB or RotJ? I'm sure that Aurebesh scrolls across the screen while R2 was talking to him. It'd be pretty small, though. 24.58.219.25 23:14, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

  • I believe it does. That's how Luke deciphered what R2 said. And, it's in RotJ. JorrelFraajic 23:34, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
  • "That's right Artoo. Dagobah system." -- Riffsyphon1024 04:46, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Appearences

Does it list all the things it appeared in or just some?

  • It's obvious it appears in many more sources than listed, but the list of appearances is probably where it is mentioned or shown directly. It can get overwhelming though. -- Riffsyphon1024 17:25, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Should its appearence in the RotS game be mentioned? Aurebesh can be seen in the games unlocked content features where it decodes into basic. Darth Scath 01:28, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Darth Scath

Also, I think the statement "Aurebesh was introduced five years [after the Star Wars Holiday Special] in Return of the Jedi." Wasn't Aurebesh introduced in The Empire Strikes Back, when R2D2 is talking to Luke on their way to Dagobah, and the X-Wing dashboard display is translating his words?RobPetrone 18:17, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Perhaps a reorginization?

Reading through the Aurebesh article, I've noticed that the "Appearances" section is a jumble of different examples without really any coherent list. Now, I think the examples shown there are excellent; however, should we move that list to an "Example" subcategory, and make a separate "Appearances" list that matches most (if not all) of our other articles? Jorrel Fraajic 14:55, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

  • Absolutely. Probably with some thinning of the the new Example subsection. jSarek 19:08, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Really using it

  • It sounds kind of like a gimmick, but it wouldn’t be cool if we could have Aurebesh as a language that could be used on Wookieepedia, if it was possible. I mean it’s kinda a language and it is Star Wars, just an idea I thought I'd share.Darth Nezzera (Talk) 11:44, 25 September 2007(UTC)
    • Two problems. 1) Not everyone understands Aurebesh as well as some. 2) How would Aurebesh be typed? -- Riffsyphon1024 16:34, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
      • Well there is a font that is close to being write all that would have to be fixed is the capitals on one stay the same as normal font and the other just makes it bigger, when it should be reversed that's the only problem. The second problem of some people so not understand it, in my opinion is not a problem because I mean not everyone knows Spanish, Dutch, French, or Portugese or even english but we still have them. Here is the site I got it from hereDarth Nezzera (Talk) 19:28, 25 September 2007(UTC)
        • So what do you think of my idea about adding Aurebesh as a language on wookieepedia? Darth Nezzera (Talk) 18:43, 03 October 2007(UTC)
          • Er, I still don't know what you mean pal. Aurebesh is not a language. 07:25, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
            • It is a written language so it's still possible it translates to english but it's just a cool gimmick I thought of. Also don't for get to completely sign your comment. Let me now what you think. Darth Nezzera(In umbris potestas est) 12:57, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
              • That is not the issue. It's not worth using it as a way to communicate on here for the reasons I stated before. In others words, no. And it's a form of writing, not a language as the other user said. Galactic Basic Standard is the language which is essentially the same as English. -- Riffsyphon1024 18:36, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Episode I aurebesh

The aurebesh that appears in Episode I surely is close to, but not absolutely similar to teh classic one from WEG. Most characters only differ mildly in form, but the letters k, m, w and y are all new. It's a pity I can't font it...

Here is a rough microsoft paint table I made of this variant of the aurabesh: [1] It's based on the newAurebesh font, the changes being provided by the screenshots from the naboo starfighter

LelalMekha 17:05, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Phonetic alphabet

I've been reading Labyrinth of Evil, and I've noticed that Clone troopers seem to have their own version of the NATO phonetic alphabet. So far I've identified four letters:

  • B:Bacta
  • G:Grek
  • I:Ion
  • J:Jenth

If anyone can expand on this, please let me know. We could be on our way to a new article.--The All-knowing Sith'ari 12:13, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Roman Characters and Aurebesh

In the Republic Commando books,Roman characters are often used instead of Aurebesh. For example, on page 287 of Republic Commando: True Colors Besany Wennen spells out "Dhannut Logistics". Also, every thing in the GAR seems to use Roman alphabet acronyms. Ex.: ARCs, RCs, DCs, LAAT/i, ect. (GAR itself is an acronym for "Grand Army of the Republic"). Does this mean that both alphabets are used in the EU? Should these occurences be mentioned? --Splinter Smile 07:07, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
