Talk:Battleship

Need?
Edit
Is this article really needed? Battleship is the largest class of ships in a Navy. Battleship is synonymous with Dreadnought. If there is a different use in the Star Wars universe then fine. -Finlayson 05:38, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- I was actually planning on making a series of articles and additions to some I see already exist (frigate, corvette), to both showcase the different types in the SW galaxy, and define their rl counterparts. So, I'll probably look this one over, as well. I think it has some measure of value, particularly for people who aren't well-versed in the different types of warships. ^^; VT-16 08:05, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- OK. There's already an article for a Star Dreadnought though. A Battleship one seems redundant. -Finlayson
- I was thinking, that among those profiles, there'd be one for battleships and one for dreadnoughts, but they can be combined if necessary. Basically, it's to show the variety of the names in use, including "dreadnought" in "star dreadnought". VT-16 21:31, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- Certain vessels are specifically designated as Battleships, and never as Dreadnoughts - Kwenn 21:35, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- True, but I planned to make articles mentioning the different uses of the naval terms. Hell, they even have a "salvage dreadnought" for scrap-collecting. Another thing is that dreadnoughts are a type of battleships (ones with a main battery of only big guns, produced after the revolutionary HMS Dreadnought), but battleships aren't necessarily dreadnoughts. And I think there are instances where different times, classification systems and cultures have different types of battleships. VT-16 21:42, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- I've come around on this. A Dreadnought is the largest of Battleships. I haven't come across a captial ship specfically referred to as a "Battleship" in a SW movie or novel yet. If someone has, please update the examples in this article. Thanks. -Jeff 16:54, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
- The Lucrehulk-class, maybe? *rollseyes* ;P

- And the Home One-type has been called that in at least one source. VT-16 08:04, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
- I was the creator of this article and I only put Home one there because it was twice the size of a imperial star destroyer. And a Battleship is different than a dreadnoght.Star Destroyer 2500 22:01, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
- Are we doing this based on what they're called, or how big the ships are? I'm not a fleet junkie, but has the Executor ever been called a battleship?-LtNOWIS 22:49, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
- We should be doing it on how big they are and the article calls the Executor a battleship.Star Destroyer 2500 23:28, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
- The Empire had some of its biggest battleships built by Kuat (as well as Rendili and Loronar) according to "The Illustrated Star Wars Universe". These were bigger than ISDs, so they would account for the Executor-class as well. And in ITW:OT and SW:CL, the Executor is described as a Star Dreadnought ("dreadnought" being the term for "all-big gun battleship"). VT-16 08:36, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Behind the Scenes
Edit
- I added the US Navy sentence to point out that not everybody uses the term Dreadnought as the preceding sentences implied. Thanks for clarfying the wording VT-16. -Finlayson 20:56, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
