Question
Edit
Question: since the pilots of this squad are codenamed with the prefix DS-61 (as in DS-61-2, from the CCG), would Black Squadron be known as the 61st Death Star squadron, or similar? - Kwenn
- I think it's almost certain that they were the 61st Squadron, given Decipher's cards for characters who are pilots in the 181st (aka Saber Squadron) had similar designations (DS-181-3, for instance). jSarek 08:48, 12 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- So is it just the 61st Squadron, or specifically the 61st Death Star Squadron (assuming 'DS' stands for 'Death Star')? - Kwenn
- I'm not certain. Given the number of squadrons in the Empire, you'd think it'd have to be the latter, but I don't think there's been a precedent either way for it (unless someone knows how the 181st was formally referred to). jSarek 20:37, 14 Jul 2005 (UTC)

A few things...
- 1.) In the Death Star Technical Manual, p. 36, Wedge calls Black Squadron "Lord Darth Vader's personal squadron", and says they were the only TIEs in the battle. I don't think we can assume that DS-61 designations indicates any more association with the Death Star than DS-181 designations do for the 181st....
- 2.) The 181st is called the "181st Imperial Fighter Wing", and then, after 'downsizing' to I think two squadrons, sometimes the "181st Imperial Fighter Group" (though a Group is usually a multi-wing command). Considering that the 181st are a multi-squadron unit, it's possible that Black Squadron are part of the 61st Wing... but impossible to be sure.
- 3.) Also, what's the source for the "Black 9" referred to? I can find references to DS-61-8 in the CCG, but not to a Nine... --McEwok 21:30, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
- The 181st was downsized to three squadrons (from an original six) and was always referred to as "the 181st Imperial Fighter Group" thereafter. Also, in the United States Air Force a group is a subordinate unit to a wing, so the terminology is not a mistake. Shock Wave 01:00, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
Black 11
Edit
A Black 11 appears as one of the two escort fighters from Thunderflare when Vader arrives at the second Death Star, according to the Decipher CCG. The pilot is named Wampa. Unfortunately there is no other descriptions of the other squadron members, or if he was part of the same group as the Black Squadron at Yavin. --AdmiralWesJanson 05:21, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Black Eight and Black Squadron
Edit
AFAIK there isnt a source which says, that this both Squadrons are the same... --Modgamers 21:11, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Juno Eclipse WOTC article
Edit
The new article on this TFU character says she was a commander of Vader's Black Eight Squadron, then later a pilot of the Rogue Shadow. Since this took place inbetween ROTS and ANH, I guess Ghent's Black Eight were based on this earlier unit? VT-16 23:32, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
Black Squadron vs Black Eight
Edit
Where is it stated that Black Squadron and the Black Eight are the same unit? If there is no such statement, then the article should be divided into two separate articles - we shouldn't assume that they are one and the same. - Cavalier One(Squadron channel) 14:47, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- Technically Black Squadron was anihilated at the Battle of Yavin with every member save Vader (and presumably Qorl) KIA. As is noted in the article, Vader revived the squadron a year later under the command of Nas Ghent who gave them the nickname "the Black Eight". 181stAce 01:49, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
- However, the article may be wrong and that may be an assumption. But the Black Eight existed as early as 3 BBY, as per The Force Unleashed. - Cavalier One(Squadron channel) 07:27, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
And who is to say that Vader wouldn't have a personal squadron that early? They are the same and after the original Black Squadron was wiped out at Yavin, he reformed it a year later. —Unsigned comment by 24.27.193.29 (talk • contribs).
