[edit] Sentient or non-sentient?

[edit] Inspired by vampires?

The species and, for that matter, the entire world on which Planet of Twilight takes place feels like something out of a vampire tale: They prolong the lives of their slaves, can't stand sunlight, drain life, et cetera. The passages about Leia in Asgad's palace could have been taken out of a Dracula epigon. Now, while I'm sure I'm not the only one to have noticed, is there any published work on this?
