"For over a thousand generations" Edit

I think it should be noted that the Jedi were around for at least 20,000 before the Battle of Yavin, due to Obi Wan's quotation "For over a thousand generations, the Jedi were guardians of the Old Republic". A generation is commonly accepted to be twenty years. This quote also implies that the Old Republic was founded over 20,000 years before the rise of the Empire. This REALLY needs to be taken into account. Darth Ravigious (talk) 03:18, April 6, 2016 (UTC)

  • Well, let me play devil's advocate here. Considering that Legends isn't a factor, do we really know that the Jedi Order was around for a thousand generations? The Jedi as a philosophy, way of life, skill set, etc may have been around for a thousand generations, but maybe the Jedi Order itself is only a few thousand years old? Maybe it took a long time for any sort of formalized Order to spring up. Remember, Obi-Wan never said anything about the Jedi Order, just the Jedi. It wasn't until Episode I that we saw a canonical introduction to a formalized Jedi Order. So there are different directions that the official canon story could take. Given that, we shouldn't say that the Jedi Order was around for at least 20,000 years. That may not be true. We also shouldn't make any judgements about how long the Old Republic has been around. Canon has already shown us that there's the Old Republic and the Galactic Republic. So we shouldn't read much into Obi-Wan's line. The Star Wars story has evolved since Episode IV, and our assumptions could be incorrect. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 03:52, April 6, 2016 (UTC)
    • Ah. Alright. Just bringing it up. It was just one of those things that popped into my head all of a sudden and made me wonder. Hmm, that being the case, what of the Jedi article, seeing as the concept of "Jedi" is more along the idea of ideals as opposed to the concept of establishment (seeing as the comparison you implied is more akin to the difference between a man of chivalry and the member of an order of knights with a chivalric code, which I agree with)? • I would use the exact wording Obi-Wan does: "for over a thousand generations." I wouldn't apply real world numbers to it. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 04:33, April 6, 2016 (UTC)
